First, is the Unarmed skill really a viable combat option in this game? How does it compare to having a good weapon?

Second, what's the purpose of the Single-handed skill? You seem to get a better damage bonus from the sword+shield skill, as well as a significant bonus to defense. So why would anyone consider using Single-handed?

Unarmed does substancial damage, I believe (didn't play it), but you don't get any boost from items, nor any advantage in reach, so it's kinda weak.

Single-handed attacks faster than sword and shield.

That was my thought as well, but when I was switching between them to test that, I had a hard time telling if single-handed was really faster.

I use duel wielding only... OFFENSE, OFFENSE, OFFENSE!!!!

I also noticed my Strength stats change when using close combat weapons... Is that determined by the Warrior class I picked?

It's not very noticeable unless you are fighting some monsters. Then you can see their health going down quicker.

Not that I know, but maybe one (or both,) of your melee weapons give a boost to strength? did you put maybe a Strength Charm on the weapon(s) ?

Choose to be a Warrior if you left Farglow give you 4 points in Strength, but I think you know that already ... wink

No strength charm, but I believe you actually have to use the weapons to get you the boost to your stats, right?

If I use the Bow my strength goes from 52 to 42, but once I hit an enemy with my swords, it goes back up to 52.

I'm currently playing through with an unarmed character and it is indeed viable. One of the reasons for this is that your base damage automatically increases each time you level up - even without putting points into Strength.

Single-handed theoretically attacks faster than Sword and Shield, but the speed of attacks isn't really a huge deal in this game.

Your Bow uses Dexterity as the primary stat for determining damage, melee attacks use Strength, which accounts for the difference when switching weapons.
