I brought a disk version of Divine Divinity on Amazon and simply downloaded the latest patch from the web.

As for Beyond Divinity, I started playing it at the start of this year and then I came across that inventory glitch. I followed Raze's instructions (can't remember what they were) to fix the inventory glitch and the result was that the glitch was fixed but at the cost of my save. Thankfully I hadn't got to far into the game but I haven't bothered to start again either. Currently playing Baldur's Gate series at the moment so I don't really have time for Beyond Divinity which I can say - from my time spent playing it - is inferior to Divine Divinity.

Beyond Divinity feels like the emphasis is on looting and killing more and during my four hours of play, I didn't encounter much dialogue as opposed to Divine Divinity which contains lots of dialogue at some parts. However, I did enjoy the little that I did play of Beyond Divinity.
