There are some markers on the map for main plot quests, but generally not a lot of hand holding. For the most part you will come across more information, or a relevant NPC/item/location just by exploring.

FWIW, opponents give more experience when you are at a lower level, and less if you are higher, while quests give fixed experience. Unless you are running into trouble with combat and there are no other areas to explore, or you simply want to clear out some quests, it is a little better to delay turning in quests. That helps with levelling more near the start of the game, though; by the end of the game it is not going to make a huge difference (maximizing experience points).
