You're not forced to clear out all of the catacombs first ... There are many more areas you can explore in the meanwhile to level up, find or buy better equipment, ....
Oh right.. I just figured I was meant to do at least the first quest before leaving the area..
Now that I have a decent dagger with the Poison/Fire/Lighting warrior skills, things are getting easier
