Aric's warrior guide extracted from the old forum

I've been playing a warrior for over 30 levels and hopefully I'm doing something right. After all the helpful responses I've gotten whenever I've had a question I thought I'd type up a quick helper guide to players making a warrior and give back some to the Larian community

Now assuming that you will beat the game at level 50, you can max out 12 skills. Here are the essential warrior skills: lockpick, identify, wisdom, magic barrier,---- expertise (weapon expertise of your choice), shield expertise (if you're going one handed style), augment damage, repair, stun, augment defense, spiritual damage, death strike

Important Edit: You can beat the game successfully and easily using the above skills. However in retrospect some of them aren't really the best bang for your buck. If you want to play a straight up warrior go ahead with these. If you don't mind stretching the mold a bit consider dropping shield expertise, stun and death strike for one of the following class kits

warrior summoner- max out demonic aide, the passive summons' enhancer, put one point in the aura so you can get him to follow you. Also note that all buffer spells work on summons so if you wish you could drop even more combat skills for buffers that would work on both, you and your summoned. If you must drop more I suggest the following - wisdom and augment damage.
Also keep an eye out for intelligence charms, so you don't have to train intelligence.

Asassin- poison weapon and traps. You can pick up poison weapon even as a regular warrior and you don't need alchemy, as poison potions are everywhere. As far as traps go they are extremely powerful, so if you like things difficult you might want to avoid them.

Do not train lockpicking past 3 or identify past 4. You will learn these through play. Put these extra points into charms. 3 points in charms are all you will need. Also keep an eye out for items that give +1 to charm skill. I have found two while looking.

Wisdom contrary to popular belief is an excellent skill for warriors. Why? quite simple. It's only a waste of a skill point if you had something else better to train. There is no skill worth training besides the ones I listed (heh, I can imagine the responses to that comment). Also wisdom is not a trade giving up a skill point for 5 stat points. Because you will gain more than one extra level using it. I have it maxed out and I don't regret it. One thing to remember though, ALWAYS train wisdom whenever you're allowed if you let it slide a level, all the exp you gain is exp wasted.

Lockpicking is an acceptable warrior skill. Plenty of adventurers and mercenary warriors need to know how to pick a lock or two. As far as pickpocketing goes though, you don't need it. If you want to solve the plague quest and cure all 3 victims, just find/buy 2 items that give pickpocket bonus. Or if you're evil like me, just kill one of them after solving their quest and give the potion they drop to the other two. Same thing with the thieves guild, to rob that bum all you need is pickpocket at one, I kept an amulet of such for just this purpose.

As far as magic goes. Well, first of all I have 3 points in restoration, 2 in banish, 2 in summon skeleton, and 1 in almost all the mage spells and I never trained any of them. Books to learn mage spells are everywhere and can even be bought. Besides if you put points into spells you will feel pressured to train intelligence which would be a big mistake.

Which brings me to stat training. Never train intelligence. I put one point in it after the vampire quest because I ended up with an intel of 9 and it was damn ugly. Strength is important. You want to use good equipment, don't you? Me personally, I always prefered the high agility just don't get hit, warrior. I trained to the following tune- I got my strength to 65 thus allowing me to use pretty much everything. When I found the well I put the +10 into strength, getting it to 75. At that level I could use every armor and one handed blade in the game (didn't beat it yet but I'm wearing plate and using a bastard sword, so I doubt I will find anything that requires more). At 65 I stopped training strength. I got my constitution to 50 (not all at once though). With over 300 hitpoints I am confident that nothing will kill me in one hit, specially with magic barrier being trained. As long as I have 1 hp left I can always drink a potion. And now I am pouring all my stat points into agility. Level 33 monsters have a 46 percent chance of hitting me and I have only just started training agility. My method isn't the end all be all though, you can play around a little with your agility-strength-con. Just don't train intelligence.

Don't use a weapon that does frost damage. Why you ask? Simple. I used a frost blade for a while and the problem was this: I never got hurt and never drank a potion. I ended up with over 150 healing potions alone not counting the other potions. This was bad because the damn potions were weighing me down. Also without needing potions I never had anything to buy. I now have over 500,000 gp! And this is after buying my house and spending 10,000 at the well. Its nice to need to buy something occasionally

Anyway, frost damage also just makes things too easy. I'm not a glutton for pain but it's just too much. I play a warrior to go toe-to-toe with a critter, to whirl in the dance of blades and when I win, to savor my victory knowing I defeat yet another incredible foe in hand to hand combat. I found a unique cutlass which actually had a few more points of min damage, then my bastard of frost as well as life drain. I started using it right before I went on the uber hard quests for the warriors guild, and I was victorious. The victory was all the sweeter with my new blade. Now before I get stoned to death, if you want to use a frost blade go ahead, there's nothing wrong with using it if you wish.

Another thing - don't throw away your magic potions. Keep them in a safe spot, after the dark forest quest you learn alchemy level 1. This will allow you to mix potions and make restoration potions which heal better then healing potions. And they recover mana so you can cast restoration and heal yourself some more

meat-don't dump it, eat it, fool. Boar meat, wolf meat, dog meat, human meat. Meat is meat and it's good for you. Bread too. They are free healing potions that you're only allowed to use occasionally. I have about 500 pounds of meat in my house

General tips
Do every quest. Every single one. Monsters don't respawn and exp is precious. Kill everything that looks at you funny. Kill things that smell funny. Go over every inch of the map. There should be no fog of war anywhere unless it's an area you can't go like a pond.

quicksave and quickload are your friends

Just because you're loaded doesn't mean you should stop caring about gold. Never know when you might need some. Also in the beginning, when money is actually scarce, loot and sell everything. But try not to upset any merchants. Most merchants move around and they have terrible eyesight.

Don't kill cats

Do quests in logical order or they will never leave your quest log

Leave notes on the automap. When you get a quest they may mark their map but they dont mark their location. After you finish their quest you're going to be scratching your head, wondering where that person was. Make it routine- every time you get a quest stick a note on their head.

after every level read your traits page-it's fun

If you want to be an archer you can still use my guide. Just take points from strength and put more in agility. Also, all my melee skills listed, move them to the appropriate archery skills.

You can speciallize in any weapon you want but remember: male warriors start with a point in sword speciallization.....

The pyramid stones: You can use them strategically in battle if you're an archer or mage to teleport to different corners of a room, but personally I find they have a far better use. Leave one in your house. Claim George's house as your own until you buy one. Now many people say, you should leave one next to your favorite merchant (can anyone say Rivertown marketplace?) And for a while I lived there, even made a bed of hay right in the middle of the road. But I realized it was kind of a waste. There is a teleporter right smack dab next to Ars Magicana, so it takes but a moment to get there. When you buy your house it is a 15-30 second run to the teleporter in the park. Better to leave it in your home because.....storage! Previously I just left items on the floor until merchants earned enough gold to buy them. It was a terrible mess and I kept accidently grabbing stuff belonging to people when trying to pick my loot up. It was annoying to say the least. In your house you have a chest, cupboard, and 2 barrels, not to mention tables... use them. When you want to make a selling run use your stones to teleport to your house, grab your loot, run to the teleporter and sell at the marketplace as usual. Yes, it takes about half a minute more, not to mention the loading time but it really is worth it. And when you max out in repair you really will have no need to head to the marketplace every 15 minutes.

The AC of an item isn't the most important end all be all. It is more than worth it giving up 10 or even 20 armor class for another item which has a gaggle of special abilities. Up to a point of course going down 100 armor class for + 2 to defense and +10 to fire resist isn't the best of deals. A good general guide are merchants. If you're not sure about what to use, see which item a merchant is offering to pay more for. Keep in mind, merchants gauge item worth by all its abilities including things that are of no use to you (like intelligence bonuses for me).

The cutlass I acquired has a life drain of two and I believe it's one of those rare uniques that were talked about. It's called the Cutlass of Tuto something or other. I was surprised how effective life drain is. With a rating of two I find my health consistently recovering on its own. Definitely a nice replacement for frost.

Only use gold charms for items. Maybe silver but no lower than silver. Unless you KNOW your going to replace this item in the future and just want a quick fix. Or you're at endgame and haven't found any good charms. I have found that orcs are excellent droppers of charms (orc camps not orcs in the beginning area)

The best armor I've ever seen is sold by the elven bow merchant (ironically enough he's a bowman wearing leather). I've been everywhere cept the dwarven halls so I can't say for certain he's the best armor merchant period, but his stuff is mighty fine.

Enchant weapon is useful. I said, train it 3 times, using the skill points left over from taught skills. That plus never selling items that give pluses to enchant weapons give you all the charm power you need.
One thing that cannot be argued is the fact I am currently right before hitting the gong. I am level 40. I have completed every single side-quest except the treasure map and have killed everything and anything everywhere that looked at me funny. Without frost. I slaughtered the succubus and laughed at the dragonrider in the warriors guild. Hopefully I have a clue or two in the right direction.

Okay, I'm not one to talk out of his ass so I went and did some experiments. It has been widely said that summoning is useless. I decided to test it out. I loaded my save prior to ringing the gong so I did it again and boom had 6 skill points. I put 4 in demonic aide because to max out in it ya have to be level 48, quite stiff, indeed. Anyway, I put 1 point in that aura thing so they follow you and 1 point in passive enhancement for summons.
I summoned my level 38 deathknight I believe and sicced him on an Imp. He killed it with minimal damage to himself. Now on one hand those imps give me over 5000 exp and I'm level 46 so that's pretty impressive. On the other hand demonic aide is the best summoning spell out there and I wasn't even able to max it out. Considering that he should have waxed the imp in seconds. When it battled an imp chieftan he was promptly killed and I had to summon another one and help a bit to kill him. Again though, it takes even me a while to kill one of those chieftains.
Also, I did some other experiments and much to my delight I can cast restoration to heal my deathknight, I could even cast bless and spellshield on him. And a mage or summoner warrior at my level probably would have had that passive summoner enhancer maxed out by now while I only had 1 point in it. I assume the ressurection thing is for bringing a summoned back to life, though unless it costs a fraction of the mana, I see no reason to do so instead of just summoning another pet. Also putting more points into deathknight didn't let me summon more than one.
In conclusion after much playing around I would have to say, if all the other summons are as effective as the deathknight in the wasteland in their respective area (skeletons in the starting town etc.) then summoning really isn't so bad for a mage. In essence, a summon would keep the critter off the mage, so he could blast it, thus not having to worry about training constitution and strength in order to survive a melee.
As to the question of whether or not a warrior would profit more from dropping some of the skills I listed and replacing it with summoning........
It would be a viable and probably successful (not to mention cool) idea to drop stun and deathblow and go for demonic aide and that passive summoning enhancement. And put 1 point in that aura thing so the deathknight doesn't just stand there but actually follows you.

And the hot discussion amongst warrior experts

Mr_Tiger123: Thanks for the tips - really appreciate them. However I also found that investing some skill points in I believe it is called the "Deadly trap" or something ability comes in really handy as well. It saves a load of hassle...all I do is walk into a room packed with enemies release a few death scorpions and sit back and watch the show...plus i end up gettin all the xp hehe.

Aric: Indeed the scorp trap is very effective. You could invest in it if you want, If you're using a two-hander you can take the points that would have gone into shield. If not I suggest taking points from killing blow.
Personally while not minding a companion, I dont much care for the idea of releasing exploding scorps, just not my style. But then again I was always a melee nut

one more thing I forgot to add is the "reflect projectile" abiliti I think its called - I cant recall the name exactly but all it does is reflect arrows fired at you. For some strange reason I wa surprised that there was a post about that and people were saying it dosent work!! HEY IT WORKS EXTRERMELY WELL FOR ME. infact at a level 2 it ends up killing even a few of the enemies for me. All I have to do is just stand there and yawn with an occaisional very low damage hit most of the projectiles for me get reflected - I would say about 80% of them!! Surprising but true!
I think there are a few bugs in the game like some of the abilities are totally usless for the warrior - esp the shield bashing I found (after experementing with a lv4 shield bashing) that he nealy almost never does the shield bashing. Its like once in a blue moon occurance.

Mr_Tiger123: And the scorpion trap ability is way too strong to be honest so i dont use it anymore - another skill wasted...and the summon other creatures options is way too weak (except death knight - which for me is nearly as strong as the death scorpions) and its just a CRAZY world out there!!

Xavier: Aric, I think Freeze is also a good skill to have, there are just some fights that you need to freeze the enemies on...IE: Dragon riders. With resistances over 100 for most(Except poison =85)their Flamebreaths and their freeze Hurts like HELL

Elliot: There are a couple of good swords you can find for warriors without relying on random chance. There is a cairn to the east of the Dwarf village which has been built over the Sword Of Chaos, which was certainly my preferred weapon for the rest of the game, and the elf in the park of Verdistis has the Death Blade Of The Vampiric Lord which he will trade for. My second favourite sword
I would say for a warrior, never bother with Shield skill - all the best weapons are two-handed, and I think they're all swords too. I wasted a lot of points at earlier levels on things like Axes which are basically useless later in the game.

For 'impossible' foes, use the Fade From Sight ability combined with Warrior's Swing - it burns up a lot of Mana, but Swing doesn't cancel your invisibility - a fact I discovered only very late in the game, but which helped me kill Josephina very easily in the Wastelands (it was actually that fight I discovered it in )

I would guess that a Shadows potion would work the same way, but I haven't
tested it.

Aric: just got my holy weapon. Its a incredible one-handed sword. I soppose there goes that complaint. One thing though, everything in this game even static drops like the holy sword are random. Just keep quickloading until you get something decent. I'll give you two examples.
1. dragon shield in stormfist armory. When I hound it, only had a AC of 230. My current shield at the time was 210 So I quickloaded for a few minutes and it turned into a AC of 430- nuff said there
2. Holy sword. old one did 27-60 damage or some such. The one I stuck with does 71-100 damage.

My Blade Of Chaos (I got the name slightly wrong earlier, sorry!) does 78-123 damage and has Recuperation 0, so I quite like it
My Death Blade 'only' does 48-107 dam, but has Life Drain (5) which doesn't hurt and a Recup 0.

Elliot: I don't doubt you're right Aric, but it seems a little strange to go through all the hassle of finding the great Holy Weapon if it doesn't turn out to be all that amazing. I'd have thought if there was one item in the game that wasn't random it would be that...

Fiver: Shield Expertise is a waste. Magic Barrier is a waste. More than one point into repair is a waste. Enchant weapon is the best skill in the game. Even if you dont use death scorpians, deadly gift is essential against very hard hitting bosses. Maces are the best weapons. I found a 75-85 damage one handed mace. With mastery (which gives a 90% bonus and an added random damage that goes as high as 32), you will kill stuff with ease and not have to have a cheesy freeze effect on your weapon to survive. Wisdom is also a waste. Its never a good idea to trade skill points for stat points (basically what the skills wisdom, bless and magical might do). Death Strike is a major waste. Everything later has ridico spiritual resist. Also, never EVER go two handed. It is not worth it (shields are great). If you do decide to go two handed though, it is more effecient to go sword (percentage damage bonus is great for 2 handers). Also, stun is worthless if you find a freeze weapon and even if you dont, your points are best spent else where.
My recommendations?

Weapon (mace is best), Aug Def, Aug Damage (semi-optional, benefit is minimal), Deadly Gift (good even without death scorps, those bombs are a low mana cost and really helpful for hard hitting enemies you want to dispense quick like), 1 point in Repair (more is a waste), 0-2 points in restoration (you get 3 points from quests, can get more if lucky from shops), Enchant Weapon (best skill in the game, essential to every character).

Those are the most essential skills to a warrior. With enchant, mana is really not a problem later, so you might consider summon demonic aide to help you mitigate damage (its cool cuz it gets some of your passives if you inest in that skill). Similarly, lockpick is not essential and you should only invest in it if you really want to complete a couple quests/find dragon armor and have not had the luck to find +lockpick items (you can easily get by without it). Also, if you invest in lockpick, never invest more than 3 points since you can get 2 through quests. Other than undead, spiders and lizards, most enemies are fairly receptive to poison. Poison weapon or poison body isnt a bad choice (that passive warrior poison skill sucks though). Also, if you make sure not to turn in Tingale, you can buy a steady supply of poison from him (so no real need for alchemy). Well, theres other options, of course, but those I think are the best for a true warrior type.

Aric: This is a guide to being a warrior. If you dont put points into these skills then your not putting points into anything, which has to be worse then training poor skills.
Sure you could take the best of the warrior skills and spend everything else on spells....and become a mage warrior. If you actually want to play a full, standard, generic or however you wish to phrase it warrior your not going to be interested in mage skills. I refused to even look at the mage skills, never even considered them as options. They way I picked skills are simple. I assumed I would be level 50 by endgame. Which means 12 skills maxxed out. Then I looked at the warrior and survivalist skill sets and picked the 12 best skills. For a melee warrior. Cutting out all archery related skills and all weapon mastiers cept one, doesnt leave many skills left. I belive the 12 I picked are the best from the ones available.
I didnt go traps for 2 reasons. One just like using frost I found it makes things to easy and more importantly I didnt picture my warrior running around with a pack of exploding scorpians.
Enchant weapon is useful. I said train it 3 times, using the skill points left over from taught skills.
And by the way another reason never to put a point in a single magic skill.....as a warrior your not going to waste precious stat points training intelligence. But training spells without training intelligence is a excerise in futlity. AND not to mention there are books with spells in them everwhere. I have banish and summon skeleton up to level 3,restoration at 3, metorstrike at 3, lightning 2, and a bunch of other spells at 1. And I never put a point into any of them.

Mr_Tiger123: One effective strategy that I found useful with my frost sword was that when fighting enemies that use melee run into them and circle them until they surround you from all sides...then do your special move (John Travolta style..haha) and freeze them all in one go! Plus I have reflect missile ability equipped to level 1 or 2 I cant remember how much and 80% of projectiles get reflected off me inclusing magical attacks so I'm happy there as well since they hardly do any damage. By investing in Sword mastery to the max no matter which sword I take the recuperation time is always zero...so that ability helps a LOT + it increases damage. And as for travelling I use my frog statuettet in areas I already have cleared an area of monsters cos while transformed into a frog you travel at the speed of light!! Its cool!

Oh one final thing: When you level up no need to spend all you skill points immediately..I nearly ALWAYS have like 6 or more ability points unused in reserve and only use them when I encounter some enemy that is very difficult and try out ability points in different abilities until I find which is the most effective and then use some on that ability. Believe me it helps a lot. If you solve all the quests and kill all the monsters the game by itself gives you enough skill and ability points to become a one man army so no worries. By the way I'm a jack of all trades in the game - I balanced my character developnment so that not only am I strong agile but also high on mana and constitution plus I have mastered most of the lores in the abilities. Just take it easy and us your hard earned points slowly. Hard earned - Easily burned , dont do that or you wont enjoy your hard work

Fiver: Well, its up to you but if you really think sinking points into gimp skills like stun, spiritual damage, death strike, and magic barrier is worth it then more power to you. However, I find those skills to be 4 of the more worthless skills in the game. Stun is worthless because it is resisted quite often by enemies that matter and other enemies are more often than not killed in one shot (yes, I play on hard). Spiritual damage can and will be resisted much more than poison weapon. Death Strike has a poor chance of going off and a high chance of being resisted: worthless. Magic barrier is meaningless. 5 points yields 25 to all resists; my resists are so high without it that I laugh at elemental damage. And yes, level 50 is an exaggeration. Im sure that you CAN get to level 50 if you go ahead and waste points into something like wisdom and you take the time to slaughter everything on the map but using 5 skill points to gain 5 more levels and wasting over 5 hours to get an additional 5 is silly to me. Wisdom is self defeating. Stat points are nothing compared to the power of well used skill points. Wasting 5 skill points so you get a few more stat points is silly and, ultimately, self defeating

Oh, I forgot to mention how meaningless shield bash was. Well, its meaningless and its damage is trivial. Overall, your build wastes points on lots of skills that ultimately mean nothing to your total offense or your success in the game. Sorry if that sounds sharp but its true.

Mr_Tiger123: I dont think skills like death strike or stun are worth investing in because as in my case I found a sworw with deathstrike 5! so if I had invested points there it would have been wasted...and plus I already encountered many weapons with stun ability in them as well and its true the stun truly sucks - it just not worth it. Frost on the other hand is the best by far - however unfortunately we cant research it can only be gained through weapons

Aric: Drop stun, death blow, shield expertise and wisdom for

demonic aide, passive enhancement, that skill that transfers some of your skills and abilites, and poison weapon.

Sound about right?

Fiver: Ya, thats what I would recommend.
Poison weap really is sorta optional though I think. Its cool but its uses are sorta limited.

FRS: The ressurection spell is for resurecting dead enemies (Such as dragon riders ) to fight on your side. The more points you have in it the greater the power of your ressurected monster.

It can also be used to create an xp farm:
1)Kill powerful+ high xp giving enemy
2)ressurect it w/o using aura of command on it
3)teleport away
4)teleport back and the enemy will be back to normal and hostile, so you can kill him, get xp, lather, rinse, repeat.

Though this can work if you are desperate, it seems to me it is easier to just contiue in the game... But I have heard of people using this technique to their benefit.

Nobody mentioned how using bows takes most of the difficulty out of the game

Just make sure you find a hunting bow somewhere (needn't even be magical), and you're able to kill all but the most powerful of enemies (i.e. the REAL bosses, not those wimpy elite orcs, imp chieftains,...) in only a couple of hits.

Combine with poison weapon (not poison arrow) and splitting arrows for HAVOC.

I'm going to make a mage now, 'cuz the game was way too easy after I got my first bow (bought it from george a long bow, I think it was)

BTW: I had 5 ranks in true shot, but I hear everywhere that doesn't work. This shows that the game can be completed with very little skill points

Nobody going to write a mage guide?

When I had trouble killing orcs early on, I took 1 level of Freeze (later 2). Would not have been able to kill War drummers without it. Later it was useful against Lizardmen, but I had other skills so it wasn't needed.

Anything else I wanted to Freeze tended to be immune , so I decided my Survivor needed some magical damage. Tried Spinning blades but rather than it doing 20 damage as listed it tends to do 6-12 too often and I concluded that recasting Restoration as needed while in melee combat is more mana effective.

I ran into a couple boss-type monsters and was not able to reliably hit them with bow or dagger, so I took Lightning skill. Liches tend to resist Lightning too much, but most other level 20-30ish monsters are good Lightning targets. It's important to note that you can re-cast Lightning as fast as you can click the mouse button, which essentially makes it better than any weapon I've seen.
Only need Lightning level 1 and click-click-click-click, etc = monster dies in 3 seconds. Especially useful if the monster heals itself, like Lizard Fanatic, because they don't have time to heal.

At character level 16-21, my favorite skill has been Wall of Skeleton(bones).
Its NOT a "wall" but an instant summon of 5 skeletons at once. Never train Summon Skeleton, when you can wait and get this skill. It is great to summon these blockers if you like to use a bow or spells to do most of your damage, or even if you just want to keep a bunch of monsters busy while you hack apart the ones closest to you.

I have not tried any poison or trap skill yet as I have not needed it.
There was a book of Restoration that I could not pick up for some reason, it being near the edge of the screen. I trained Telekinesis and was able to pick it up, at least I assume it was the Telekinsis click I did...

If there is a enemy you're unabled to kill, try polymorph. You'll be amazed how many strong monsters dont have much spirit resistance, plus there's a bug in it so monsters dont morph back
