I have a lot of fun playing both top-down RPGs, and the 3d sort of RPGs that Divinity 2 represents. (Especially in its graphically upgraded form.) I'm wondering if this studio is heading towards only making the more old-school RPGs, or if a more "AAA" title like I consider Divinity 2 TDKS (or the developer edition, I've only played the console version) is in the works in the future?

I hope that the studio can afford to/wants to do more of the latter if it is possible. If not, however, I wouldn't mind more of the very old-school type of RPGs they're developing now either - as my signature suggests, I've been gaming for a long time, so I'm willing to play something more along the lines of Diablo or a strategy game if you aren't going to do any more 3d-perspective titles; especially if they have a good story. Also, are your new games going to be released for consoles, or are they going to be PC-only? (If the latter, I hope they have modest resource requirements!)

I don't have a strong preference for camera perspective (between isometric and third person), but another RPG with a dragon knight character would pretty much have to be third person, since that suits flight much better. IMNSHO it would be a shame if Larian didn't eventually make another such RPG.

Original Sin uses an isometric camera because that allows much more world interaction. It wasn't a question of budget (the same game engine is being used for Dragon Commander). Divinity – Original Sin revealed !

Larian mentioned awhile ago (here) that there could be a console version of Dragon Commander, if financial backing was secured. I don't know if changes and additions to the game since then (Land Ahoy) make a console version any more or less likely.
Recently Larian asked if there was any interest in controller support for Original Sin (Good isometric RPGs with controller support?); if added, that would allow a console version of the game.

I am interested in controller-support... I have a PC Logitech Xbox-for-PC compatible controller, and use it when there's a game that'll run on my PC that also supports it, as I prefer a controller over a mouse or WASD. I agree that it would be a shame if Larian doesn't do a third-person sort of sequal to Divinity 2 TDKS. After all, Divinity 2 TDKS (on the Xbox 360) is my first Larian game, though I have played games like the original Divinity series also (and probably will eventually get them, they're both about $6 and will run fine on my PC.)

I'm glad to hear that Larian is taking some inspiration from Ultima, according to the blog. I was a big fan of those, though I started with Ultima V or VI I think. (Whichever was the first one with VGA graphics, which was a quantum leap in graphics technology at that time), and never really played the ones immediately after those because their memory management tricks conflicted with my QEMU setup at the time which would mean taking down my BBS and reconfiguring my boot config.sys file just to play them, and using up precious space on my 40MB HD besides. (Does this date me? hehe ) However, I did play some text-only Infocom RPGs before that on an older relative's Apple II with a monocrome monitor before I had my own PC; which I hope he won't pattern Divinity after because that's *too* retro. grin Also I spent more hours than a roommate wanted playing "Wizardry" on his pre-286 808x PC, another RPG delight. (That one I wouldn't mind seeing again in a similar form, but not with CGA graphics, but again, probably also too old-school for many users.)

Divinity 2 TDKS though, in new bottles, manages to capture that old RPG wine very well - it reminds me more of the classic RPGs than any other similar RPG title, and I have several of them, on the Xbox. The way the characters do dialogue is lifted right out of the old RPGs, albeit with more animation, and the "hack and slash" combat is very old-school. It's really an undiscovered gem, the big publishers managed to hype other RPG games from competitors, and sadly, I hear the original release was rather "rough around the edges" which didn't help matters.

Thanks for the welcome. It's nice to see developers keeping the old-school RPG flame going. In spite of the different approach, I'm looking forward to the new games from Larian.

I don't see how "Land Ahoy" would present a problem in and of itself for a console port; there's at least two console strategy games with land/sea battles combined out there (thinking of Battlefields:Midway (?) and its sequel Battlefields:Pacific (I may be getting the titles wrong)), though their mechanics look a bit different than Dragon Commander. Of course Wizards of the Coast themselves did the "Magic the Gathering" games on the console, not that Dragon Commander is the same as that either.

As for financial backing, I just finished the demo, and paid for both Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga on X360, and got Divine Divinity for my PC to play while I wait to get that game. I don't think ~$44 is enough financial backing though, is it. wink Every little bit helps though. smile

Couldn've been me, sometimes. wink
Although I must admit that I'm currently going rather into the opposite direction. :hihi:
