Hi all,

(depending upon what is considered a spoiler, some might consider this to have spoilers in it)

I was really enjoying playing the "The Dragon Knight Saga", though I became thoroughly confused after I completed the Battle Tower on Sentinel Island and saw a message saying that all the characters in Broken Valley are now dead. So I went back to Broken Valley to see what was going on and it was full of deadly gas.

I keep hoping that the characters within Broken Valley might have found shelter in some mine or something. So I've been researching online for answers, because even though it's a game, I get attached to the characters. Yet I can't find any answer on the web. At this moment I find I'm having trouble even wanting to play the game until I find out for sure, whether or not all of or at least some of the character who resided in "Broken Valley" are still alive or not.

Also, if they're truly all dead, is there some mission I overlooked that could have saved them all...or at least some of them. Again I become rather attached to the NPC's in the game, especially when more then half the quest's I took on was for those NPC's.

Lastly, if they are dead and that is just the way the game developers made it, (i.e. they were suppose to die) can someone please explain to me why the game's story brushed over this? And why did the game developers think it was alright to kill off all the people in Broken Valley without any explanation.

Hello Wisetaner there is only explanation on this- Damian (main antagonist)becomes angry because of Dragoknight`s (yours) deeds, but however there are few people who could survive , you`ll be able to meet them much later at other region:) and also in Poisoned Broken Valley.Unfortunately there is no way to warn people about gathering disaster or save them anyway. But you`ll have chance to save some of them in Poisoned Broken Valley your assumption near to true)

Sassan gave you a warning before you entered the summoning chamber (which leads to taking over the battle tower), though doesn't explicitly state what will happen in Broken Valley and the exterior of Sentinel Island.

There is no way you could have saved the NPCs who didn't make it out of Broken Valley or off the island. There is also no way to tell who didn't escape, apart from those you will meet or learn the fate of later in the game; none go to the fjords and stay, but there is no reason some NPCs could not have escaped and simply gone elsewhere (Farglow, or Rivertown Gorge, etc).

As far as shelter goes in Broken Valley, there are several places above the level of the poison gas, like Lovis' tower and the mine tower. Outside on Sentinel Island there is one teleporter above the poison gas, as well as part of the path leading up to the battle tower and many of the trees.

Generally, all the NPC's from there are dead with a few exceptions.

Here are my guesses for what happened to the "survivors". Spoilers for parts of Flames of Vengeance.

Needleman was probably down in the valley near the "Bellegar" teleporter to the top of Lovis Tower when he saw the attack coming.

Dana, Derk, Folo and Kevin might have hitched a ride on the zeppelin that took Rhode to Aleroth.

I don't know what happens to the miners you can free, but I think they're basically dead as well - there's no place they can go to escape the valley without going through the poison gas.

I think the game's story brushed over that because there wasn't anything you could have done, and you may or may not have interacted with any or all of the people in either a nice or jerkish fashion.

The developers probably killed them off BECAUSE you got attached to them, and that's a really good way to make you hate Damian.

Actually,
I'm pretty sure miners would have a way to deal with poor air quality, and as grateful as they are to be freed from captivity, I doubt they would be suicidal.

Thank you everyone for the input. I'm glad to know that some of them may have escaped and that I may have a chance to meet up with them later in the game. It just really annoys me that the game developers glossed over this whole situation. It would have been so much better if there had been a longer cut-scene to show the outcome of the Broken Valley NPC's. I mean it's bad enough to kill off all the Broken Vally NPC's, but it's thoroughly frustrating to kill them off and not give the player a proper cut-scene to show the struggle the NPC's faced.

I mean there was a very short cut-scene of Damain smiling evily aboard his mount with fires all around him. But that was about it. There wasn't really any specific or precise visual explanation as to the fate of the NPC's.

The other thing that bothered me about this, is that once going into the Sentinel Island and Fjords it's as though I'm starting over from scratch with all the NPC's. It just makes the game transitions between areas feel less smooth and interrupts the whole flow of the storyline. ...at least in my opinion. I still like the game, it's just frustrating.

What about the Patriarch?
Spoiler:-

Did the Patriarch survive at the end? The cut scene at the end of the original Ego Draconis / between ED and DKS showed the Orobas Fjords getting gassed as well when champion harbor was attacked. I don't think I saw him escape his cave but yet somehow you get the wrath of the patriarch spell at the end of DKS

He's fine.
If he can open a portal to the Hall of Echoes, I'm sure he could get out of the cave, if he were so inclined. Even if he were vulnerable to poison gas, I'm sure he could deal with it (what with his true name being a spell of creation, and millennia being a blink of an eye to him: Looking for Patriarch Conversation).

Dragon Slayers never ever killed or encountered actual Dragon, it is even mentioned in the game, perhaps by Patriarch himself. Otherwise they didn't survive. The only know to us case when dragon was killed is the gameplay -- which could not or could be a canon -- one where you can kill a Dragon at the end of DivDiv, after being promoted to Divine One.

Ah I was looking for that Patriarch conversation a while back as I don't have a save near there. He implies he is one of a few and now that he escaped the gas cloud he could have a role in future games set after Divinity 2. Guess he is like a god as he is one of the creator race.

I thought about that too when i played the game. For story reasons i can understand most people in broken valley dying, but i remember being even more upset about a few survivors on Sentinel Island also getting gassed. I can understand a gas attack easily succeeding in a closed valley, but an island? No way! There should have at least been a way to save at least some of them for goody two shoes wannabes like me.

I guess I can understand the attack, after all, you're the only real threat Damian has had in centuries (well, apart from Talana, and from the story, I could assume she had only recently discovered what Damian was doing, and taken up her crusade, when she was attacked by the slayers).

I don't know what all Damian knows about your activities, but I assume he has spies around the land, and I don't suppose you can kill off a hundred Black Ring without him noticing.

It would have been nice for you to at least have a chance during the first battle, after taking the tower, to save some of those on the island (also, one would think that the island herself had means of dealing with the poison gas, or helping those stranded on her - then again, her main concern was with your support, not with any other individuals, considering 4 of the candidates had to die - how much different from Damian does that make Sentinel Island?).

Oh well, it's just a game, and though I agree with wisetaner, with regard to becoming attached to many of the NPCs in Broken Valley and on Sentinel Island, I have to remember that this is war, the stakes are much higher than what you see in the game (anger Damian enough, and the whole planet could become like Broken Valley, if you don't stop him). After all, power-hungry dictators are less concerned about how many they have control over, as they are about the totality of their control - and tend to kill off those who continue to oppose them (and many "innocent" bystanders in the process).

Anyway, I did restore to before I dealt with Sentinel Island, and took the advice of one of the guides I downloaded: explore every nook and cranny. It's surprising what I found, both in Broken Valley and the Orobas Fjords (surprising where I was allowed to go, there).

Now, back to Sentinel Island, the decisions, exploration, and taking of the tower.

It's something I've also wondered about; since it's known that several did survive, and they're just the ones where their paths and the player's crossed again, it seems a fair bet that a number of the others managed to get away somehow too, whether by zeppelin, finding another path to high ground or by some other means. Likewise, some of the Sentinel Island NPCs could have survived in theory; the player's dialogue suggests a certain amount of pessimism, though not necessarily certainty. Again, we know at least one of them survived, there may be others.

Of course maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part. But I can open up the developer's console and go back to the unmolested version of Broken Valley any time I want!
