Maybe that is where the ancient ruins under Aleroth came from. When it was in danger of flooding, surrounding land was moved under the city to raise it up, which brought with it extended areas of the catacombs not accessible in Divine Divinity. Alternately, an attack by the Black Ring meant to destroy the city could have been diverted/deflected with those results.
