Not a fan of turn based at all, but this is Larian and if I'm ever going force feed myself it will be with D:OS.
I think with the technology we have today, turn base actually may become a very enjoyable style for those who disliked it in its previous forms.
There is a game being developed through Kickstarter, I think it is called "There Came an Echo" that is taking an approach to combat that may be an interesting means of accompaniment to turn based commands and control.
Kickstarter: There Came an Echo Granted the game I mentioned is real time, but the same concept can be applied to turn based control. Think of being able to mix physical control of selections while calling out verbal commands to NPC party members.
mage cast web, rogue backstab the archer...
cleric... warrior needs healing badly (/wink)
Turn based systems can be tweaked to fit a much more controlled style of play and with the knowledge and experience of so many action based systems in the past, there may be a way to work a system that provides a smooth flow, yet still constrained to the detailed control of tactical turn based play.
