So far we've heard that both characters have the ability to use the Source magic. Also so far as I can recall all the gameplay videos have only shown combat using magic spells in combat. (i.e. the ice, water, fire, lightning spells and some buffs).

I'm curious if both characters are always played as what you'd call "mages" of if there are any abilities that aren't magic-oriented? We've heard about lots of different weapon types but are those used for anything other than basic attacks?

Currently there are 6 schools of magic, 4 for the elements, one for combat / warrior skills and the other for ranger / survivor skills.

The elemental spells allow Larian to show off how spells can interact with each other and the world, etc (and they may be the most developed), but you will be able to pretty much build your characters as you wish (as source magic is a big part of the plot, I don't imagine you can completely ignore it).

There will be a kickstarter update about skills at some point, as well as combat.

Thanks for the information, I think maybe I had read about the 6 schools and just forgot about it oops.

But it would be nice develop a non-magical character in this way: source magic could be considered also in the melee and ranged skills. For example in any RPG a melee skill usually looks supernatural and the animations usually have special effects, also in most RPG only your character can use them. So in D:OS melee and ranged skills could be considered source magic too. By this way would be possible have one character complete melee.
