Well.. tbh.. the plane were you build your home at apparently does not really have to be that different.. it could just be an open grassland perhaps. And i mean.. you can shoot freaking fireballs and call down lightning.. if they would say i wuld be able to teleport to a far away forest ... i would believe it :P
If with barren place they mean desertlike and then keeps looking better.. its actually not breaking anything.
If it has alien/netherworld characteristics however.. then it might break the immersion yeah :P
In my opinion.. if it looks like it fits with how the normal world looks and progresses.. i could not care less.
If they were to go for weird dark places made entirely out of magic.. hmm.. it might still be cool but i get why people would hate it.
