The only reason you would want to delete .4/.x4 files would be for the (very) rare bug mentioned above where they could be added to the save folder before the blessing ceremony (which would result in your character not being resurrected upon getting to the wastelands).
If the map shows your character in a black area just outside the council hall, then it is stuck looking for the Play CD/DVD to play a cutscene video. If you have the disk version, insert the play disk; if you have the download version and installed an unofficial language patch meant for the disk version, you'll need to create a play disk (see
Divine Divinity asking for play-disc #3) or transfer the save to an unmodified install of the game long enough to get to the wastelands.
