Level 1: Magic Cost: 5
Level 2: Magic Cost: 8
Level 3: Magic Cost: 11
Level 4: Magic Cost: 14
Level 5: Magic Cost: 17

so, yes it uses up this little bit of mana - and yes, it makes the games very easy - but comes in handy if you encounter powerful enemies. With Aura of Command you can keep your little helpers close by you.
If they land the killing blow, you get lesser XP.
