I thought that diablo was more about the loot than the character stats, mind you, i haven't played the game, is just the general feeling i get from it, why it always needs to be about getting more levels or purple loot tho'? Something like a Bellegar encounter would be reward enough imo.

Depends of the game, is true for more western ones but, in a lot of japanese games, plot segments are part of the dungeons' progression.
