The save editor could have been used to add stat points to your old save, but if you started a new game you do not need it.
The link I gave for the save editor mentions the disk version patch at the top of the page, then an item editor below that, and then the save editor. There are links at the top of the page to go directly to either the item editor or the save editor.
When you distribute stat points, you click on the the '+' buttons beside each stat (strength, agility, intelligence, constitution). The X button (Close) at the bottom of the window should change into a checkmark button (Commit Changes) and any stats you increase should be shown in yellow text rather than white, and a '-' button is added beside the '+' button (all the '+' buttons will disappear when you have distributed all the points available, and return if you remove any of the recently distributed points). As soon as you click the checkmark button, the '-' buttons should disappear beside the stats that you increased, and those stats should remain.
