- open up the skill window (click the bottom left icon in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen, by the health bar; it shows an arrow in a target if you have no free skill points, or a white arrow icon on a red background if you do)

- if necessary, use the arrows in the centre of the window, on either side of the 'Way of the Warrior/Mage/Survivor' title, to switch to the survivor skills

- select the Lockpick skill (top level section, top row, second icon from the left, with an opened padlock icon), and (if you meet the level requirements and have a free skill point) click on the checkmark button (centre bottom) to lean the skill.

Level 1 of Lockpick can be learned as soon as you have a skill point; level 2 requires character level 7.

Lockpicks are required to use the skill. Normal lockpicks will break upon successfully using the skill, though you will eventually get some magic unbreakable lockpicks (hang on to them, rather than complete the associated quest - in the updated original disk release you could return them to complete the quest and buy them back, but in the download / anthology version you can not).

You can get 2 levels of Lockpick in Verdistis (one as an option from a couple skills as a quest reward, and another from something like a quest).
After joining the thieves guild you can learn Lockpick, Evade Trap (not enough in the game to worry about) or Pickpocket. The other level you can learn in the thieves guild by loosing a bet.
