With a bit of practice (or maybe underhanded tactics), the little head start with someone else learning the game shouldn't make too much difference.

At least some of those 100 people are spread out all over the world, though. In any case, after people had a couple days to learn the controls playing against the AI, the Steam group grew and the kickstarter comments became much more active, there are more people playing against each other.
