What I was most interested in is the "Dragons on Earth Campaign map" - what precisely does that entail?

A multiplayer map of our Earth with the various factions thrown about? Just wondering.

Do we need to "claim" them or will the game automatically recognise a pre-order.

I have the steam version.

The The Imperial Edition news on the Dragon Commander site says "The Imperial Edition will be made available on the day of release as downloadable content, and people who preorder will receive a download key."
It could be automatic if Steam is going to list the Imperial Edition, as opposed to just the separate game and upgrade DLC (not sure what Steam usually does).

Steam usually recognizes a preorder automatically.

If you pre-ordered anywhere, the Larian Vault, GoG, Kickstarter, you get the bonuses. As for how, look two posts up from yours.
