So I watched the total biscuit preview:

Two caveat: I do not know what version they played and I have not played in about 2 weeks and will not have time to play for another 10 days (i know the game has been undergoing revision but unsure how much has changed).
-
I mostly agree with their comments on the RTS portion but not sure I would use the same words. I suspect the recent change to slow things down would help myself but still there seems to be something missing or it just doesnt' feel right. I'm thinking back on total-war rome (and even king arthur); these games are slightly different in that there is no base building (though king arthur has capture points); but I'm wondering if part of the issue is not just the pace but also the massive number (and types) of troupes. In the two games mention above (and also company heroes which has some what similar rts mechanics) the number and types of troupes are reduced (as well as the pace) which allows for not only better control of troupes but a clearer distinction between troupes and their role. When I did play DC i often found it very difficult to effectively use different types of troupes in combat or take advantage of their special ability.

Now I want to stress a few things:
a) I've generally never been very good about optimizing RTS mechanics; even in my starcraft days those who study how to optimize output (for example) could easily rush me and end the game very quickly.

b) Since I've been gaming a long time my pace has slowed down - i definitely favor games these days that are TBS (though I have to admit bioshock infinite was a blast) or can be paused. Kind of wished the RTS portion was TBS (ala age of wonders - which has a few larger tactical maps - fan made - but is TBS.

I have to mention (b) because different players have different expectation and goals.
-
I want to re-stress that I have not played in a couple of weeks so it is quite possible that the current incarnation is very different from when I last played. I hope to be able to play again around the 30th though that will be fairly late in the beta cycle if the game is released on the 6th.
-
I was also wondering if the game would be better (or worse) if the base building aspect was dropped or significantly reduced but capture points retained (this would make the mechanics a bit closer to king arthur/company of heroes; capture points could give preset bonus whether it be additional troups, morale, healing, ...)
