Ok, managed to get a match against two AI in the mp campaign and it worked!
Whatever the reason the first few times, this time everything was ok.
Maybe I did indeed invade with too many units and the AI directly retreated?
Whatever, I have managed to play two matches correctly now (one time I had ~40%, the other time ~60%).
