Hi,

I playing some skirmishes before jumping in to the campaign.

When researching a special abilities, units are not using them
automatically (the active ones) ?

There is no autocast. You have to cast things manually. It gets easier with practice, though. Adjusting the game speed with + / - can help you get the feel for it.
