If it's actually DRM free then a pirated version wouldn't be any different from a real version

We don't know yet. If there is a difference in the game itself, Larian could seed booby trapped versions themselves. It could be something like a quest or location that can only be accessed if you agree/argue that (in-game) pirates are unethical lowlifes, or something.

Well, for the former, it's usually a bad move for companies to upload bugged versions of the game to torrents by themselves. That's happened quite a few times in the past, and it normally ends up backfiring. Not to mention, if the company uploaded it, it's no longer a pirate copy -- the company that owns it uploaded it for free distribution, which means they're giving you permission to download it.

The latter wouldn't be a "special surprise" for pirate copies since that'd just be an in game storyline that applies to everyone.

I'm wondering that myself as the release on the Larian Vault was buggy and I had to use some "innounp.exe" program to just unpack the .bin files myself. I did not use the official installer. So do the pirates. Does that mean I get bunnies in the last mission or something?

The problem with the bin file was corruption during upload, and was fixed. From Installation freezes

4. run the downloader and make sure let it download to the same location where your old files are
5. the downloader should only download DragonCommander-2.bin and see that the other files are there

Gamersgate got an update today on the corrupt file and they should have fixed it by now as well.

So maybe Larian came to an arrangement with the seven gods... evil

Yes, yes, I have redownloaded, thank you, but I can't be assed to reinstall because the game works fine (so far).

Several times I neglected to spend my gold or research and was notified that it had been stolen. Maybe in the "surprise" version that happens more frequently to the point of not being able to afford the more advanced stuff.

That's not random.

Your gold/research is capped so you can't hoard 10000 gold to start the 2nd chapter.

Game Dev Tycoon did quite a twist on that, and it was amazing.

Otherwise, I think the lack of multiplayer matchmaking support in the GOG version was already quite a surprise. I wonder if that's what they were referring to?

Okay, yeah, I noticed gold won't go higher than 50 even when I sell a building. As well as the cost of building getting progressively higher with each one already owned. So much for trying to fill the map with gold mines and factories.

Maybe the surprise is that the DRM-free version does not have access to the lobby, meaning all DRM-free purchasers are potential pirates. laugh

So has anyone found a (pirate) release that has the "surprise"?

The reputable releases have properly functioning installers.. So there likely wouldn't be any issues.
