Okay, I got my pet and it has a nice level 9 fireball which incinerates most creatures with one hit. Unfortunately, it wanders so far behind me that by the time it gets up to where the battle is taking place, everything is dead wink I have to backflip 30 times to get it involved. Its brain has just decayed too much to be worthwhile....

Now if it could ride on my back when I was in dragon form, then it'd be worth its weight in Malachite Gems.

It should catch up, possibly by teleporting, if you get too far ahead.

Try a mage head. I didn't test the ranger head much in the original release of D2:ED, or at all in DKS, but comparing a warrior head to a mage head in both versions, I found it wandered a lot less and was more aggressive / helpful with a mage head. Some people like the warrior head (and its Fatality skill), but I used a mage head with my warrior in D2:ED and ranger in DKS.

Hey Raze, since I'm not big on the fighting, I've just been going as far as I can in Oroboras before tackling Maxos and Rhode's goons. I'm fighting in the waterfall, killing the level 23 skeletons and leveling very fast. I think I'm 16 already. Is this okay? It doesn't ever break anything to do things out of order, does it?

You will not break anything doing things out of the expected order. You will get less experience from lower level opponents for awhile (like Broken Valley, or in the depleted ore mine in the fjords if you have not been there yet), but the extra experience you are getting now will make up for that.

When you finish off Maxos temple you get access to a new area. Your first encounter there you can mindread to get enough experience to go up a level, so it would be best to leave enough opponents in the fjords to be able to level before going there, so you get a full level with the mindread (I got to level 22 in the fjords, so the mindread brought me up to level 23). Before that encounter is also a good place to do any outstanding mindreads that you may have, since the debt will be wiped out (and if you have any levels in Wisdom, by equipment bonuses or learning it yourself, that debt will actually get you a tiny bit of extra experience).

When my ranger was on level 13 I headed to the fjords and got to level 16 clearing down the mountain path and taking out a couple opponents on the far beach, then I went back to Broken Valley to clean up a couple outstanding areas and Maxos Temple (where I got to level 17). Back to the fjords, clearing the beach by the waterfall and swimming over to the beach behind the anti-dragon shields brought me to level 18, and clearing the path past the depleted ore mine brought me to level 19 (at which point I headed back to Broken Valley to kill a rabbit).

Returning to the fjords, the first level of the mine brought me up to level 20, and the remainder and then the first 2 opponents in the waterfall cave got me to level 21. The rest of the waterfall cave could get me half way to level 22, but all of the outstanding quests I had were not enough to reach level 23 (I tried, keeping track of how much experience each quest gave). I reloaded my save outside the waterfall cave and figured out which quests I would need to turn in to just reach level 22 when combined with clearing the waterfall cave.

Okay, I'm not trying to max that much smile I did the walkable area of Orobas and then went to Maxos. I'm on Sentinel island and I was about 1/5 to level 19 and she took me the rest of the way. The Dragon Elves are 16, so I'm not getting much from them. I normally skip everything after becoming a a dragon, though I did play through the game once, so I could see the new content in Flames. I'm not sure if I can slog through the boring dragon parts to get to Flames a second time. I remember enjoying Flames though, so perhaps. I'm picking my team for the Battle Tower, though if I recall it doesn't matter except for certain people give quests. I'll look at some of your other posts to maximize the questing. I may use the cheat portion of the DC to play the dragon in god mode. That should make it less of a hassle laugh

Bring on the alpha of D: OS

P.S. The game is fairly easy because I lucked into a piece of Elder gear from the demon. It had 75 magic damage, which is like a level 9 enchant. I broke it down and put it on stuff I could equip. I've got it on Talana's axe and Rothman's bow and find I'm using to bow and killing everything even though I only have one point spent in the bow skill line. I've got one point in explosive arrow and I have an item with one more point.

I use Talana's axe if I need to heal or up my mana. I enchanted it with the 75 magic damage too, so it does great damage and has a life leech and a mana leech enchant also. I love that magic damage on weapons translates to spells.

It is mostly just the quests that are different between the battle tower servants, but there are some significant differences in the quest rewards. Highlights from the Dragon Knight Saga FAQ/Guide:

[Skill Trainers] Lowdown:

-Kenneth:
Most Priest and Mage skills are half price to train.
Maximum reward for 1st quest requires failing another quest.
Give up The Demon Wars quest item (worth 3 skill points!!!)
(If the above doesn't seem bad enough, consider that choosing Kenneth costs you the THREE skill points The Demon Wars)

-Hermosa:
Most Warrior and Ranger skills are half price to train.
Weapon Expertise skills (such as Unarmed, Single-Handed, Dual Wield, etc.) are half price to train.
Give up the Hermosa's Necklace jewelry item (must choose Hermosa to get).
Give up The Art of War quest item (no other use, must choose Hermosa to get).
Give up the Myrthos sword (very powerful, +1 to Destruction skill).

Recommended choice: Hermosa

...

[Alchemists] Lowdown:

-Allan
Unique potion formula, "Allan Brew." (see section 18 for more info).
Quests give more EXP.
Give up the Potion of Wisdom consumable (permanent +5 to Intelligence stat).
Potion of Wisdom can be used yourself, but will cost you the second upgrade to the Alchemy Garden.

-Barbatos
Free Lv5 stat potions (Strength, Dexterity, Vitality).
Give up the Master's Spell Book quest item (no other use).
Give up the Alchemy Amulet jewelry item (+1 to Regenerate and Wisdom).
Use the Potion of Wisdom (permanent +5 to Intelligence stat) yourself.

Recommended choice: Either

...

[Enchanters] Lowdown:

-Wesson
Quests give more EXP.
Give up the Wesson's goods quest item (no other use).
Give up the Raze's Cuirass armour item (+1 to Reflect).

-Radcliff
Can get 2 Malachite Gems at the cost of the 2nd upgrade.
Give up the Goblin Stone quest item (can't get without Radcliff).
Two unique monster log entries

Recommended choice: Radcliff
[IMO, 2 malachite gems are not worth failing the second quest for, and Raze's Cuirass isn't that special that it can not be given up; I had a better cuirass by the time I got it, anyway]

...

[Necromancer] Lowdown:

-Jonelath:
More Melee Armour for Creature.

-Igor:
More Magic Armour for Creature.
Give up the Book of the Dead quest item (no other use).
Give up the Stone's Ring jewelry item (+1 to Summon Mastery and Blind, can't get without Igor).

Recommended choice: Either

Good to know. I barely use my creature on normal as I've been fine without him. Wesson's wife is kinda funny, but I'm going Radcliff this time because I went Wesson last time. Hermosa is cute, so I pick her. Barbatos keeps my Dragon Knight humble, so I think I have my party. I'll go with Igor, I think. Too bad Naberius bites it.
