The information we have today suggests we will see the beta emerge after 14th. There will not be an alpha.
Anyone else looking forward to it?

11 years of experience managing IT projects in the SMB sector.
After the 14th is a best estimate based on the available information from various sources, including Swen himself, and determined that the quantity of the workload and intentions of the company would push it beyond Dec 14th.
I would be happy to explain more, but I don't want this estimate to come across as a criticism. Obviously, as a fan (and customer) I wish only the best success for Larian and appreciate what hard work they put into this project.

Well statistically speaking there are more days after dec 14th than before....

However, there are some days after dec 14th, when the probability of alpha being released is certainly equal to zero (dec 24 - dec 26 and dec 31)... ^^ So, if we also assume that alpha will not be released on Saturday or Sunday, we have 6 days (including today) before dec 14 and 7 days after dec 14, when the probability of getting the alpha is not zero. So, altogether (under the assumption of a uniform probability distribution), the probability of the alpha release is 6/13 before dec 14 and 7/13 after this date.^^
Of course, there might be other factors so that the assumption of a uniform distribution might not apply^^...

That probability assumes that every day has an equal probability, but the days each have different weights to them that I'm not fully sure even Swen knows.
Unless otherwise specified, just an opinion or simple curiosity.

My guess is, that it comes (early) next year, after this year's christmas + holidays. Why? Because they probably don't want to give support for the alpha in the holidays. Or they will release it before christmas, but with the hint, that we can submit feedback, but that we only get support in January. We'll see. Thankfully Original Sin is not the only kickstarter this month

hmmmm Christmas break should be really good for them, people will have more free time to play the beta and give their feedback. Furthermore (this is more personnal ^^) this would be a wonderful Christmas gift, just imagine on the 24th you receive a mail with Santa's pic saying "hé now you can explore Rivellon, merry Xmas... oh and beware of weresheeps" ^^

If they actually want the feedback they need, they really shouldn't delay much longer. The release date is fixed. They certainly can't delay until next year.

if you're talking about the 28th of february release date... I'll be perfectly honest... I don't believe that it'll be released by then :P but only time will tell ^^

Swen tweeted yesterday that he was starting a long let's play to see if the alpha build was "ready enough", so a release this coming week is possible.

release on feb. 28th seems rel. fixed since swen mentioned binding contracts regarding release in his blog. alpha will most likely come out before xmas when swens let's play which he announced via twitter a few days ago goes well. if not, my guess goes somewhen after xmas maybe early jan.

I’d be happier if they would delay it even further, but I don’t know how possible that would be regarding their contracts, available resources and so on. I wonder if Larian could get an extension to their contracts if it *really had to be*. This is all pure speculation of course, I have no idea where development is at beyond general impressions and fan word-of-mouth. I'm just a bit worried about having a predetermined set release date, though I suppose it doesn't matter too much if Larian provides good post-release support with regular patches, just so long as the game is 'polished enough' at release. Come Feb 28th they'll have had another 10 months since the kickfinisher, almost a year.
Are there any other games coming out around late February? I hope Original Sin gets a kind release in terms of competition and exposure. We need to fund the next one ;-)

i agree @robcat. i am happy to do alpha and beta test and would not mind waiting a little longer if that ensures a good start for DOS. i dont want to see happening to DOS what happened to "x rebirth"! horrible start for rebirth! but the game will get very good in the end i am sure, b/c egosoft will support the game as long as there is money ;-) egosoft is very supporting and community oriented in my opinion and experience, which - if you are a long time egosoft gamer - makes up for the mess at release BUT it does/did great damage to the reputation regarding the game and the company concerning, well, all other customers/gamers :-( so, i hope that 1) DOS is in a state that ensures at least a, let's call it, "safe release" and 2) larian will support DOS for a very long time - but judging from previous games i think that should not be much of a concern - especially since DOS seems to be a priority/favorite to swen and of course if the modding tools deliver what larian promises this game will be modder’s heaven

Which is much too late for any amount of serious testing, feedback and especially acting on said feedback imho. And I'm saying this as a developer, not as a fanboy that wants his fix "naow!" (I'm quite busy with XCOM currently, and will be for a while to come I'm sure. That is in as much time I have to play games, doing a release here as well... :P) Imnsho they are (again) being much too perfectionistic with something that's supposed to be an early build. I'll bet the "beta" we'll get will be much better than the release quality of pretty much 75% of the game industry (and that's a rather consevative number I've pulled out of a random orifice). Of course, that is assuming they didn't pull an Egosoft and made a limited version that actually works to show to the press while the main game is an unplayable mess. (warning: abundant use of sarcasm in the previous sentence) i agree @robcat. i am happy to do alpha and beta test and would not mind waiting a little longer if that ensures a good start for DOS. i dont want to see happening to DOS what happened to "x rebirth"! horrible start for rebirth! but the game will get very good in the end i am sure, b/c egosoft will support the game as long as there is money ;-) egosoft is very supporting and community oriented in my opinion and experience, which - if you are a long time egosoft gamer - makes up for the mess at release BUT it does/did great damage to the reputation regarding the game and the company concerning, well, all other customers/gamers :-( Off-topic but judging from what I hear from the X-community it could very well be the Rebirth is beyond saving as the issues aren't bugs, but core mechanics that are just broken, if your core mechanics are bust your game is pretty much beyond saving and the best you can do is patch it into a "playable" state. so, i hope that 1) DOS is in a state that ensures at least a, let's call it, "safe release" and That's a state the game should be in *after* alpha and beta, not *before*.
* as usual this is imho (unless stated otherwise); feel free to disagree, ignore or try to change my mind. Agreeing with me is ofc also allowed, but makes for much worse flamewarsarguments.
It is a full moon night and ... bèèè! ... the Weresheep are out...

Well, to be fair I think a "safe" release means it won't crash and burn every 5 min or just not run at all. Can't give much feedback on a game that can't be played.
