I have noticed that people have been playing the alpha and i have watched a few nice vids and the game looks like its coming together very well...But if the game is still in alpha - the 28th of Feb seems pretty soon to be going from alpha to beta to final, to me at least.
I am sure everyone would be more satisfied with a more polished build if it meant pushing the release back a month or 2 rather than sticking to the 28th of Feb and having to heavily patch it after release.
Maybe the alpha is just a release for the backers and its in beta internally?
What do you guys think?

I think there will be delay, yes (may be), but alpha and possibly following beta release calmed down the public/followers a bit, they've "got a taste" of what to expect and it seems like they are okay to wait a bit longer?
I personally don't mind.

Neither do i That is what i meant - i would rather they hold it back to polish it really well than to release it unfinished and/or with tons of bugs It seems way too close from releasing the alpha to be just about ready to release the final build...

delay would be ok with me. there are many good suggestions from alpha players and some of which i would very much like to see implemented. but those might take some time

I think it has been mentioned that they might be releasing the game without schedules at first, and add them later as a patch. I think this carries risks, as people will be reviewing the game and talking about the missing schedules, and missing stuff is flamebait. OTOH, I'm sure there are very good arguments to take that route nevertheless. (I am no CEO )

@Robrecht - Source? I was under the impression that schedules wouldn't be included in the alpha (at least at first), but would be in for the final release. I agree it wouldn't be a good move to release the final game without them. Also for anyone wondering about the release date (who missed the other thread), Larian tweeted a month ago that the game would be given a little more time beyond Feb 28th if it was necessary. Larian's Twitter Personally, this made me really happy as I was feeling a tad concerned about a set release date when it seems like the game still needs a lot of work to be done (though that's just an impression, it's hard to say how they're tracking from an armchair). If it was up to me I'd wish Larian all the time they need or want, assuming sufficient funds.

Everyone on the forums might be okay with a delay of the game, but here is the thing: WE. DO. NOT. MATTER.
What matters are the commitments Larian has made to retailers and such, commitments that they cannot break. The only flexibility Larian has in adjusting the release date comes from what the retailers (et al) will grant them, regardless of how many people on the forums are okay with Larian needing to take more time.
It might be the case that the game will ship without schedules, and that would certainly cost Larian some points or pointed comments from reviewers for failing to deliver on their final Kickstarter promise.
That said, it might be that we're underestimating Larian's ability to get things done fast. The editor is apparently so easy to use - for the experienced hands at Larian - that it's a snap to change a lot of values, and really fast to build and edit maps. I'm not sure that it's THAT fast to revise things though, given the lack of time.

Larian already released an unfinished game : D2 : ego draconis was not the final version they intended to release. And I know that Swen want to release a polish game (understand, one which does not need a D1 patch) but contracts are contracts :s

PS : they cannot do worse than Bethesda's games Well, Bethesda proved that if you release bare-bones game engine and modkit - community will finish the game for you for free ;3

What retailers are you talking about? I haven't seen D:OS being available for pre-orders anywhere yet, even on Steam. And even if there were, believe me, retailers are quite flexible with release dates - I've seen them change countless times on Amazon. The only commitment I'm aware of is delivering the game to Kickstarter backers in a promised state within a reasonable amount of time.

I see, I use UK Amazon and it's not there yet. But as I said before, Amazon (and any other retailer for that matter) changes release date estimates for games quite often, because it's a normal practice for developers to delay games. And developers are not obliged to deliver the game based on some retailer estimates. It will be shipped when it's ready.

Wow, I'm surprised. They must be having some serious challenges with the schedules, that would be one hell of a thing to patch in. Obviously they'd only do this if they absolutely had to, as it wouldn't exactly generate the best publicity ever. Not that it bothers me much personally, at this stage I'll be waiting some time after release before playing this epicness anyway, I just hope it doesn't harm Larian's reputation too much if it has to be. We all know how the internet is such a haven of reason, consideration and patience, especially amongst gamers. It would be nice if Larian could make the most of the wave of publicity D:OS will create - I want more awesome RPGs from them! Aramintai, Swen mentions in the comments section of one of his blog posts Why did we stretch? that Original Sin already had contracts in place prior to the kickstarter, so the development extension to the 28th February was pretty much all the extra time they were able to negotiate. Fortunately, it looks like they have at least a little more leeway with their retailers(?) etc, judging from the more recent tweet. Let us hope things go smoothly and that Larian's business associates are a lovely agreeable bunch if needed, and that they actually CAN be flexible with their shelf space and such things. Godspeed Larian, I hope you catch a break

The first link's article links to gamestar.de, they have a nice article up, and quite a few good screenies, the only ones I've taken so far are bugs, I should probably pay more attention in-game.

Well, if it takes so much time to implement everything right, then summer it is. Fortunately there are tons of other games coming in spring to get busy with.
