I got to level four, and need to head to the wilderness to find a hidden lair for the main quest. My problem is I can't get there because every group of mobs I come across are too big for my group to survive, by the time I get one down, there's still 7-9 to go, I'm out of potions, and at least two of my group are dead. I have no more quests in the city, I am pretty sure everything else is outside the city walls. So how do I continue?

I also have come to the conclusion my warrior must be glitched, because he can only do like 8 damage tops.

Yeah, as of yet melee damage is pretty insubstantial. I made all my characters learn magic so that they could actually do damage. Also, just making sure, but you picked up the two companions who can join you, right?

Edit: Reread your post, facepalmed at myself. Of course you have them XD Anyways, try the northwest gate and just fight things/ look for things like the lighthouse. And magic helps. It helps bigtime.

If 2 people in his group have died then it's safe to assume he has companions. To op, you can get resurrection scrolls or learn the spell from a skill book (all available from vendors), to get your companions up and moving again. You can also craft more healing potions with empty flasks and mushrooms.

yeah, I got them. My warrior is pretty pathetic, everything I chose when he leveled was to give him a higher chance of hitting his target, but he still misses 3 out of 5 times. He does anywhere from 8-11 damage, while zombie boars hit him for 30 on fair occasion.

The female mage does a lot of damage, and is the one that usually makes the kills, but since she is so fragile, as soon as she dies I know I'm facing a losing battle and just reload.

I think one thing they need to do during the alpha is a little rebalance, either drop the amount of mobs in a group, because 8 or 9 against four is overwhelming, especially when those zombie mages can summon unlimited boars, or lessen the difficulty a bit.

I've no idea how to craft items, I've been carrying around a bunch of ingredients, but I have no idea what to do with them.

It's a good idea to take out the skeleton mages first. I usually summon an ice golem next to them then pummel them with fireballs. Note about the ice golem though: his ice wall spell is severely nerfed by the fact that the ice he leaves behind is a massive pain in the dick. Just saying.

Drag items onto each other to try and craft, some posts in the forum regarding recipes and known bugs for crafting that can guide you pretty well.

Balance wise you just need to play around a bit and find something that works for you, I do well with ice wall and teleport to keep things away from me, at the same time I took an armour skill on my mage to equip heavier stuff which has helped, whack a regen on it when things close in, and use ice dart or whatever it's called to freeze individual targets, you can also learn ice elemental for use as a tank and for an additional ice wall cast. For your warrior are you one or two handed spec, cus I've found since the last 2 updates my warrior has done well with 2 handed weapons like the hire-able companion, and you just need to remember to keep a club handy for skeletons.

Also for issues regarding the ice left behind if you have someone in your party that can cast rain at the moment you can craft a path for yourself through it with relative ease considering, not fantastic but it works for now.

Yeah, I spent 6 minutes trying to move out of it because I kept slipping on the ice. It frustrated me so much I decided to never use it again.
One thing I love is the environment effects, like making it rain, then using the electric blast spell to damage them more. Unfortunately the mobs like the skeleton and zombies that I'm up against now don't seem to take much damage from it.

For the most part I'm enjoying the game, it reminds me a little of Neverwinter Nights, and I loved that game, hopefully these things get ironed out as the alpha progresses.

I never tried just combining items, I expected I needed a crafting station to make items, like an alchemy bench or a forge, so I was clicking on things like that with no effect.

I ended up deleting my saves and restarting, I backed myself into a corner and couldn't continue. I'm rolling a 2 handed warrior this time, hopefully he's able to cause a bit more damage.

The difficulty could stand to be easier with the option for difficulty levels, but one thing I learnt is too make liberal use of crowd control abilities.
There are many ways to stun/fear/knock down enemies and even with cooldowns, you can keep several enemies in a battle locked down indefinitely. Ice floors may be a pain to navigate around, but enemies will too continuously slip over them.
The electricity in the water doesn't do much damage, but has a good chance to electrify (stun) the enemies.

You are much less likely to slip on ice if you walk, so click close to your character(s) to move them. Outside combat the chance of slipping could still stand to be lowered, though.

You can try to lure the large enemy groups, which are just next to Cyseal, to the town gates. The guards at the gates will then join the fight and help you to defeat the boars. Otherwise, as others have mentioned, stunning/fear/teleportation/phoenix dive are your friends.

I like the larger enemy groups and don't want to see them cut down, once the bugged melee /ranged damage is fixed, the enemies won't last as long and so you can survive better.

Enemy damage is a bit high though, the soldiers on the bridge can two-shot you from full health and there's nothing you can do about it.

There's a definite (if hidden) 'proper' way to proceed once you get to leaving the city gates:

Start with the NW section of the map and the lighthouse. There are two ghost NPC quests as well. The bunches of mobs on the way will over-run you unless you start using Rain+Winterfall, however the gelatinous ghost boss is a walk-over if you know that it has infinite spawns of adds, and that its melee damage is tiny

The boss of this area is level 4(5?), and drops x3 magical weapons which can help immensely. You should probably save-scum this boss fight so that you get a useful elemental damage typed weapon or three. This will probably triple your DPS, certainly for fighters / archers. (1H decent weapons under level 5 are virtually non-existent to this point for fighters).

Weapon spoilers:
Spears will make your mages deadly; usually add +1 to a magical skill, and with elemental typed damage, will out DPS a fighter / archer until level 8 or so. Don't be afraid of using mages as purely weapon DPS + AoE every so often

Level locked items / spells is fairly high on my dislike lists for DoS at the moment (in fact, probably why I think the game is severely lacking in some regards; it's highly linear visa vie builds etc. This is so evident, I ended up going back and playing through the entire of the original Risen to get a handle on how to do it "right"), so you need to plan your upgrades, and you can get bottle necked.

Also note that even if a quest isn't present, you can get XP for exploration and actions, which you should farm to the max - you can get level 5 from the town, no doubt about it.
There are 5-8 hidden sub-quests within the town that you should look around for, having the perk "pet talking" will unlock a couple, and lead to more XP.
The 'talk to animals' route is so worthwhile you should always have a character with it.

Character build spoilers:
You only really need two stats; <class stat>+<constitution>. Trust me, Con adds AP and HP. Get the <class stat> to 10, then pump Con. It's highly debatable if Int does anything at this point, for the record - I didn't notice additional SP, even though I put it to 10 on mages

Further content spoilers:

Progress from NW to NE slowly, but avoid the adventuring 5 quest, the large robot, as the fight outside is the hardest barring the orcs. There's a NPC with an item that can make this boss fight easier, however a decent elemental typed spear in a mage's hand can make this fight trivial. This should be your last stop before the Watcher Stones, although you can chip away at the large amount of orcs if you're careful (level 5 / boss level 7). However, the real advice is: cheese and spend all of your gold, and know which spells are level locked.

Your major issues will be skeleton archers (x2 attacks, very unbalanced in groups) all focusing on a single character - there's no harm in making a fighter tank who does nothing but spam potions on themselves.

For the record, I completed the alpha only using 3 chars (the psychopathic ice mage). Having two characters with regenerate (the spell book is called Healing) is worthwhile, but not essential.

Tips: (spoilers)

Make sure to have all 4 party members.

Loot everything and buy spells from vendor for anyone who can use them.

Train your melee to use bow/crossbow as well. (Melee and Bow are much better after patch)

When you leave the city there are two big fights you may not be ready for North East and South West. I recommend going North West out of town, you will have many low level fights. This game throws out a ton of XP so leveling is pretty quick.

One thing melee needs is Bull Rush skill to be able to get up and in-front of enemies quickly.

Winterbreath is a dominating skill, you have to use it right and look at the range of it.

Use tactics like LOS/bottlenecks.

Ice Elemental and Ice Wall work well to slow down enemies attacking. Ice rinks in the middle of the play-field also does well limiting how many attackers the baddies have.

Simply get used to playing and you'll find all the battles are very much there to be beaten.
