Well, I just wasn't sure whether or not the portal had anything to do with it because the quest marker was almost exactly on top of where that portal was. So going off that, I was getting frustrated thinking I had a gamebreaking bug and it just never occurred to me about her diary message. Just one of those "can't see the forest..." moments.
