If you save the game in Cyseal and re-enter the homestead, hopefully Zixzax will respawn. There is an upgrade you can make to the observatory, which isn't a big deal if you miss, but it might still spawn even if Zixzax is dead.
EDIT: He didn't automatically respawn when I killed him, left and re-entered. I was able to use a Resurrect scroll on him though. After that he would only talk in scripted events (clicking on the exit waypoint for the first time, and giving a choice on upgrading the observatory the next time you re-enter the homestead).
