Well that depends. A ranged attack isn't something that would trigger a counterattack even if you are equipped with a ranged weapon. BUT, there was a system my GM came up with for pen and paper that stated if someone came within striking distance of an archer AND said archer had a melee weapon, they would be allowed a counterattack but at a reduced chance and reduced damage. So there is that.

Well I'll go ahead and throw in a talent/trait idea or two if one comes to mind, it certainly doesn't seem like it'd hurt.

Trait: Thick Skulled - +50% resistance to stuns, +75% more armor to headgear, -1 to Intelligence.

I am someone that kind of likes things like traits to be double edged swords as it makes one think a lot more on how they will want their character to turn out, the % numbers are just ones I threw in for the sake of presentation, but the basic idea is that Thick Skulled means more resistance to things that will stun you (as stun to me usually translates to a concussion or dazed state from a head injury) and naturally greater head protection, which amplifies current head protection. -1 to Intelligence should be self explanatory, it is in the name of the trait.

A trio of terrible Talents today:

Talent: Slashing Specialist - +15% Slashing damage, -25% to Crushing and Piercing damage. +5% accuracy with Slashing weapons, -15% accuracy with Crushing and Piercing weapons. Melee weapons only.

Talent: Crushing Specialist - +15% Crushing damage, -25% to Slashing and Piercing damage. +5% accuracy with Crushing weapons, -15% accuracy with Slashing and Piercing weapons. Melee weapons only.

Talent: Piercing Specialist - +15% Piercing damage, -25% to Slashing and Crushing damage. +5% accuracy with Piercing weapons, -15% accuracy with Slashing and Crushing weapons. Melee weapons only.

All of these would require One-Handed or Two-Handed Rank 3. These are mainly in for roleplaying flavour. To answer the question, yes, I would personally use these on some characters, to encourage them to stick with a weapon subtype.
