You're wrong in just one point Rose, here we don't use baby or babe to women, just some guys do this.
Babe = Bebê(child)
Like you said: Guys say "baby" all the time, especially to women.
But here isn't a usual word, you can say:
Dear - Querida My love - meu amor my baby - meu bebê(not so usual, something like 30% use this) My dear wife or girlfriend - minha querida esposa ou namorada My little candy - meu docinho(with a little different meaning)
