You already see foes way before they do you, and have level indicators.
To be fair, there are some surprise ambush encounters. Also, the mail/plate helmets have negative sight modifiers on them which reduce how far the characters wearing them can see (and, at least with me, those generally are the characters up front leading the group around). Blind leading the blind and all that.
