Not many thinks make sense in the character design, and I agree with you, it would make some sense in a classless system, and be less confusing. But this is serious matter, and such a change in design would be I guess, time consuming. And time is of the essence, as you might have noticed there are quite some polishing, balancing, bug hunting to do.
