i never understand the story line in this way ->
if the machines have the capability to travel in the PAST. wy send only 1 robot? or way not send some robots and gear in the middelages? put out a virus that kills everybody and start a sociaty with robots?

who knows. that part of the story I guess. also, I find it hard to believe that people could defeat such advanced robots

...If they kill everyone in the middelages there would be no one to create the first robots later on.
So there wouldn't be any robots. And if there aren't any robots, they can't return to the middelages...
