I pledged at $25 level while it was available, but I planned to come back and study the physical tiers and upgrade my pledge. I ticked the little remind me star on the KS page, but I did not know that KS won't remind you after you've backed a project. KS didn't send me the 48 hour reminder, and I forgot to check back and upgrade my pledge before time ran out. I'm glad Larian is selling a limited number of Collectors Edition boxes because that is what I would have upgraded to, and I just ordered one.

There was mention in another topic that the Kickstarter Collectors Edition will include a few extras, so my first question is since I am a also Kickstarter backer, can I get "upgraded" to the Kickstarter CE, or will it just be the retail CE? It would be awesome if I could get the KS CE, but I'm just happy to get the CE.

Does the DVD have a DRM free copy of the game on it or does it just install and activate it on Steam?

Since the CE includes two Steam keys, depending on what's on the DVD I may switch my KS game reward to either a Larian Vault or GOG download. I don't need three Steam keys, I have a couple of friends that already bought the game on Steam Early Access due to my recommendation.

The game is DRM free, so you do not need Steam to play the game (you can for example get a digital copy from GOG or Larian Vault). However, the Dragon Commander DVD last summer, required you to have Steam connection when installing (at least I have heard this bit of information somewhere). The reason, however, was not to activate the game but rather to patch it directly because some major balance work was done in the time frame between the production process of physical copies and the actual release of the game. I do not know how it is handled with DOS but maybe you also have to connect to Steam once to get the latest patch. This is actually something which I also would like to know...

I had the same doubt and fired off a message about this to Larian on Kickstarter and haven't heard back yet. I will be very disappointed if the physical version isn't completely standalone.

EDIT: Apparently this has been a post 10 years in the making.
