Those buttons are obviously shortcuts for friends only or nobody. We know this, your point is new players do not. Sure the game doesn't explain this, but it could with a mouse over tooltip. Singleplayer could say - Solo experience, you create and control both main characters and all hirelings, other players can't join your game. Then multiplayer could say - Co-op experience, players from your steam friends list may join your game at character creation, you each create and control a main character and can assign hirelings in game, friends can drop-in/out at any time. Then it could have a disclaimer at the bottom "you can switch between single/multiplayer at any time in game with the gem above the minimap". Suggestions are better than pointing out a nitpicky flaw over and over, right? Constructive feedback or some such...
Another suggestion could be that they change it to pop up the same multiplayer option menu you get when you press the gem on the minimap when you press new game (no single or multiplayer button required - I assume this is what you're suggesting they do with the "button is redundant and may confuse someone - so why not remove it" argument), and then explain to you in a tutorial popup that you can change this at any time when you load into the game by pressing the gem near the minimap.
They could also leave it as is, if someone is confused they'll figure it out. People aren't THAT slow, and if they don't understand it they'll ask in general chat or on the forums.
Some players aren't going to be using the steam version and are just playing for the single player experience. For them the entire multiplayer option is redundant, it wouldn't make sense to remove it for their sake, right? More options is generally better, and yes they are redundant since they affect the same thing, but once you know what they do it just serves as a shortcut to get into the game quicker with friends or by yourself. The answer lies in letting people know what effect the option has on the game (obviously to us, very little), which I'm sure a manual will do (or tooltips like I suggested).
If anything remove the 'multiplayer' option in the options menu, that's the truly redundant option when we have the gem and the new game -> single or multiplayer options. I assume this is here for when we get LAN support later on, for which it would be fine to leave it. Also the multiplayer option needs to be persistent and not constantly reset to 'nobody', though I'm sure that will get fixed in a future patch.

Unless there is a hidden difference, I'm really struggling to see a need for both of these options on the menu. Even if it's to let players know the game can be played either way, isn't there a better way to get that information across (e.g. tooltip when hovering over "New Game"). That was my second post in this thread. Anyway, the reason I came here and created this thread to begin with is because I'm actually aware of what those buttons appear to do. As you said, they're just "shortcuts for friends only or nobody". You also said "obviously", but that part seems debatable since most of the people responding to this thread didn't realize these buttons simply toggled the Options > Multiplayer setting. At this point I'm not even sure most understood there isn't actually a multiplayer mode or a singleplayer mode. There's just one mode and whether or not this happened: So, when I create a new game I know I can choose either option "singleplayer" or "multiplayer" and have the exact same game experience and options. However, in the back of my head there is always this nagging thought "is there something else going on under the hood here with these options that isn't immediately obvious or that we haven't been informed about? Is this choice changing the game in some way?". And that's why I said this right off the bat: Is there an actual in-game difference that results from these two choices, or is it only there to inform players that the game can be played either single or multiplayer? Unless there is a hidden difference... That question, by the way, has not been answered. Oh, we can speculate, and while we do have Ellary running around in the background for five pages repeatedly chanting things about buttons that were made crystal clear within the first three responses of this thread, what we don't have is a real answer - because the only people that can tell us whether or not something else is happening under the hood are the developers. I completely agree with the sentiment that these buttons may, in time, have a real use once more multiplayer options (LAN, non-Steam online, etc) are added, but we'll have to wait and see for that. And even then I'm still interested in knowing if there is something else happening under the hood when a player chooses one mode over the "other" mode. Or, just confirm that they are indeed exactly the same (because that's how drop-in/drop-out games work).

I'll admit, by the time i got to page 3 I completely forgot what was on page 1. There was too much back and forth with the "this is what it does!" and "you're missing my point" stuff going on. It really is a superfluous option but I think we're just overthinking it.
I do understand that multiplayer is the exact same as singleplayer if you don't have a friend that wants to join you, and it doesn't really convey that point.
To me the buttons meant:
Do I want to play with a friend? Multiplayer.
Do I want to play alone and not be bothered? Singleplayer.

Pretty much all of the players know those two buttons are "modes" and the "Modes" are options variants. You seriously are over complicating two buttons...which are not broken and working perfectly. Why not let them focus on ya know..actual broken things in the game to get it ready for release. ^_^ *pssst* Most players spend about two seconds to a minuet or so just setting their audio/graphics and game options. Then they click New Game or Load Game. If they click new game I highly doubt they sit there n look at the buttons confused. They simply click the mode they want to play in and go. Most won't see the buttons again for quite awhile. Since they will be clicking Load Game.

The funny thing is the one real thing the "New Game > Singleplayer/Multiplayer" buttons currently do (and even then only in a roundabout way, the actual change is due to the toggling of the "Option > Multiplayer" seting) is that it locks you out of the option of inviting a player into your game during the character creation segment. And I'm not sure why anyone would want to actually do that. Why would anyone want to lock themselves out of having the *option* of inviting someone during character creation? I can understand not wanting to invite someone, but not wanting to have the "option" of inviting someone? Pressing "Singleplayer" right now is essentially saying "please remove my freedom of choice temporarily, in case I accidently get a wild hair up my bum and insist on bringing a friend into character creation for her fashion advice before continuing on to play solo..". It's the "protect me from myself" button. I just.. I don't know, what's the point. (For those that don't understand what I'm talking about, when you select "New Game > Multiplayer" you can shift-tab to bring up your Steam interface, click on someone on your friends list and select "invite to game". When you choose "New Game > Singleplayer", the option to "invite to game" isn't listed in the Steam friend interface. You can change that at almost any point.. just not during character creation.) Anyway, that's why I tend to press "New Game > Multiplayer", even when I know I'm going to play singleplayer.. because, you never know, I might suddenly change my mind, or a gaming buddy pops on while I'm in the middle of making my character, etc. At least I have the option of changing my mind. That settles it, the buttons just need to be renamed. Instead of "New Game > Singleplayer / Multiplayer" , call it "Free Will > Disabled / Enabled".

Tell the truth.. you press the Singleplayer button, don't you. Don't forget that a friend can right click you on steam and hit join game then come troll you, sometimes intentionally, sometimes accidentally where they end up with your character. :P I always choose multiplayer when I start a new game, or after loading turn the gem to blue just in case a friend wants to join, but some people prefer to play alone and absolutely abhor multiplayer or coop of any kind. So that singleplayer option would benefit them.

Just to be clear, that only can actually happen if you have your "Options > Multiplayer" set to "Offline" and then choose "New Game > Multiplayer", because it toggles "Options > Multiplayer" to "Friends". If a player takes a moment to set "Options > Multiplayer" to "Invite Only" and leaves it there, then whenever you select "New Game > Multiplayer" it leaves it in "Invite Only" mode (since that is technically a multiplayer option and no change is necessary). And then it really is up to you when (and if) they ever join. That whole thing should really be streamlined and the "fat" as it were trimmed from the menu, but maybe it will all become more relevant (and convoluted) as additional multiplayer options are added. Who knows.

Yep, this is exactly why the multiplayer options should save and be persistent or tied to particular saves, so you don't have to change it back to invite only every time you decide to play. Of course I still use the shortcut and just hit the multiplayer button, or blue gem it... friend will say "invite me", then I'll say "Nah. Just join, I'm busy stealing everything / testing build / or whatever" lol. Thankfully the people I coop with don't go on a town murder spree without asking me to save first, so I don't have to worry too much. Plus being on mumble/skype/ventrilo with the people I play with prevents them getting control of the wrong character.

You know what might make an interesting exercise for you? Go back through the thread and find all the responses from me directed at you, and all the responses from you directed at me. Read through them and let me know at what point the insulting dialogue between us began. If you end up pointing to one of my posts first, you can add "liar" to that list of yours above.

In other words, if you have it set to "invite only" and do "New Game > Multiplayer" fifty times, it should remain on "invite only" all fifty times. Are you seeing something different? If so, there may be a bug?

I'd test it but I'll take your word for it since I don't have anything installed on this fresh Windows 8.1 install.

Maybe people would be confused and not understand the difference between "new multiplayer game" and "new singleplayer game", thinking they get locked in, but I believe an equal (or greater) number would be confused if there was only one "new game" with no difference between single-player and multiplayer. So I see no net benefit in removing a button. I don't see confusion when there is only one button "New Game" because there is no other option for them to be confused about. Then when in the Character Creator they see a "Multiplayer Settings" button and ah ha moment happens. If I were grading this issue, it would be a low "nice to have" one. With time running short I wonder how much room is open for nice to haves. With Global Chat though we will see a lot of redundant early game questions, forever. If there is a real payoff, it would be monitoring Global Chat after release and whatever becomes common questions, perhaps a redesign or clarification in game is needed.
