Maybe people would be confused and not understand the difference between "new multiplayer game" and "new singleplayer game", thinking they get locked in, but I believe an equal (or greater) number would be confused if there was only one "new game" with no difference between single-player and multiplayer. So I see no net benefit in removing a button.
I don't see confusion when there is only one button "New Game" because there is no other option for them to be confused about. Then when in the Character Creator they see a "Multiplayer Settings" button and ah ha moment happens.
If I were grading this issue, it would be a low "nice to have" one. With time running short I wonder how much room is open for nice to haves.
With Global Chat though we will see a lot of redundant early game questions, forever. If there is a real payoff, it would be monitoring Global Chat after release and whatever becomes common questions, perhaps a redesign or clarification in game is needed.
Yeah, if we could make changes to the game with a snap to our, it would be nice to have the redundant "singleplayer/multiplayer" buttons tucked behind "New Game" removed, and the multiplayer "gem" and chat added to the character creation screen.
Honestly, "singleplayer" doesn't even need to be an option. The "Invitation Only" option *is* singleplayer until you choose to make it otherwise, while also providing the host with the option of bringing in someone during character creation
if the host wishes to. I'm not sure what the point is of having two options that do the same thing, save for one of them offering less options. Even if you never plan on playing the game multiplayer, "invite only" still offers you everything you need for a singleplayer experience.
I like that the game offers multiple ways to resolve a task, I'm just not convinced that gameplay philosophy should apply to the menu.
