If I buy this off STEAM right now (the regular version), what exactly will I be playing?

Also, will the game automatically upgrade to the full version on the 30th?

How much time does it take to 'beat' the beta, or finish it or whatever?

Thanks.

If you buy it off of Steam, you'll be getting the first large map of four, about 20 hours and 20-30% of the full game. The game will automatically upgrade to the full version, but your saved games will be lost - broken on purpose to avoid introducing bugs and crashes.

There's supposed to be a patch this week, so you may want to hold off playing it until that drops, because saves will also break for this patch.

The beta still needs some polishing, so if you are not used to playing beta versions, I'd advice to wait till full release. However it already rocks! grin

We are proud to report that we finished our DOS2 localization project (Hungarian). :'-)

Thanks Stabbey,

@Endre, noted. I may just get it to just play with character creation and class design. Learn the controls a bit, but just not venture off much. No experience with true Beta games before, though I have purchased games that could have been betas.

I saw the latest vid. Does that mean there's a new patch yet?

Yes, it released a couple days ago, no more big patches until the full release.

I didn't see release notes on it. Are they posted here somewhere?

STEAM doesn't mention it either.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it.

GOT IT! Thank you STEAM sale! Bought it this morning and it's downloading while I'm at work.

Now I just got to get home and play around with it.

I really can't find any good Let's Play vids of someone using an archer. Are archers not any good? I did see one vid where the guy wasn't playing an archer but he was finding all kinds of items to make arrows out of.

Can an archer do enough damage to be any good? Are there critical hits and such with bows? Is it easy to switch to a melee weapon if the enemies close in on you? I figured on having a cleric/tank as my meat shield.

Thanks.

Depending on your prior experience all classes should be viable. That said a Ranged character will have an ok time with it, assuming you understand the basic concepts of kiting, knowing the layout, and not kiting into the 'Fog of War'.

I'd suggest having a Priest as a partner. Your ranger can focus on dishing out the damage, whilst your Priesty keeps you warded and healed. They only work in a small way as a meat shield, so bear that in mind. This is what I know from the early game, I'm sure as the levels go up, roles may change...this is to be expected.

Is a priest and cleric not the same thing? Is a priest more like a healing mage?

Not quite. Just going by the presets, A cleric is an armoured warrior who has healing magic. There isn't a priest preset though, but they'd be more magic focused and less armoured, I imagine. A cleric can be a solid tank and still provide healing.

Sorry about the use of cleric/priest freely...old habits die hard. Played AD&D forever....Priests are more spell orientated..Say a Priest of Lathander , whilst a Cleric was more of a front line healer..Say a Cleric of Clangeddin , the Dwarven god of war.

Cleric is more like a paladin, useful if you use a caster or ranged 2nd class

EDIT : take into consideration that you will probably have henchmen (except if you plan to take Lone Wolf) who can fulfill the tanking/healing part^^ (one of the first henchman, or more likely henchwoman is a tanking warrior)

Ah! A AD&D player. Been playing D&D since the mid-80's. Started when I was in college ... a long time ago.

I really like archers and I'm sure I'll need healing so I figure a Archer/Cleric combo.

Hehe, I can relate LeBurns, I was heavily into 2nd Edition. Had a 5 year long campaign(on hold now 12+ years lol)

We tried a bit of 3rd edition, and it's various editions...but it just seemed like the game was turning into a console game with dice. question question sleep

But to each their own, I can remember my parents telling how things were in their day so.. cheer

I don't understand why everybody is so mad at 4th edition. It is a neat and easy to play system while still allowing all of the freedom of 3.5 if you have a decent DM and gaming group. I personally prefer it to the previous versions, which is probably why I'm not that excited about D&D next...

What you call "ease of play" I call bumbing down for the mainstream crowd. I just prefer very rigid class/race rules and restrictions. Just gives the world more life and makes more sense IMO when you just can't do everything and every character can be a demi-god. To each their own though, I understand many like it. Just call me 'old school' I guess.

On Topic: I got the Beta on a STEAM sale. Just messing around now and loving it.

I do find I mess a lot of dialog as it's rolling off the side without me seeing it. Took me forever to figure out how to turn off that dang CHAT feature. Why the heck would I want to chat with myself?
