I have just started playing, and am accumulating a whole bunch of junk. Some items are clearly ingredients, some are clearly non-useful, and then there are the ones that I can't tell if they're quest items or something else: Specifically: - Are shells useful for anything? I've tried using them & nothing seems to happen.
- What about the Zombie Painting? Is it a quest item or useful at all or can I get rid of it?
- What about guitars, soap & pitchforks?

Shells can give a temporary water resistance boost, or can be sold.
The painting is not a quest item.
Soap is used in one of the ways to craft lockpicks (with a key). In a pinch you can use a guitar or pitchfork as a weapon; generally you can just sell them.
You can put a chest or other container somewhere to stash stuff. Eventually a dedicated storage area will be opened in the End of Time.

Thank you very much! Now I have to buy back all those keys I've been selling, lol. How about fishing poles?

The key isn't used up when crafting lockpicks, just the soap.
There may be a mod to add fishing. If Larian had the resources, they would have done so similar to how they did digging, but it didn't make the cut.

Ah, even better! Thank you! Some more newbie questions: - Can recipe books be used for crafting?
- Once you have advanced the plot with a quest item (used a key or other item, showed a journal, item, etc. to the appropriate NPC), do you need to keep it?
- How about the expended star stones? Do they need to be collected/kept?

You can get hints or instructions for crafting from recipe books, but I don't think you can craft with the books themselves.
Generally not. Some keys can be used more than once, though, and some quest items have more than one use.
There is no in-game need to collect the inert star stones (don't know if you can do something with them later... probably not). They are star stones, though. Surely you can spare a few inventory slots of a vase in the End of Time for them? You can't be a hoarder if you don't even collect plot significant items like that.

Thank you ... I've seen those, but was wondering, as the crafting system seems to be very extensive (nice!). I am holding on the the stones, lol. Was just curious. A few more questions: - Can armor & weapons can be enchanted by the player, because otherwise crafting of weapons seems to be limited to lower levels (haven't figured out how to craft armor, etc. yet)
- Is there's something special about the companions' gear (which I'm also holding on to for now)? Their gear is considerably more expensive than equivalent loot in the game.
- Can ranged weapons be improved similar to bladed weapons which can be improved at a whetstone?
- The Hall of Heroes in Homestead now has an NPC offering additional companions, but they don't actually seem to be available ... is that not implemented fully in beta?

I think weapons and stuff can be improved through crafting, but I haven't tried it enough to know how, really.
The Henchmen for sale aren't available in the beta.

Metal melee weapons can definitely be improved, and so can both leather and metal armor, using blacksmith/crafting skills. They're worth investing in both for the improved performance of your gear & for the increased gold you get when you vendor them. I haven't found a way to improve either wooden weapons (clubs & ranged) or boots, bracers, etc. Nor have I found a way to enchant any gear at all.
