You are each starting with just one character - there are only two source hunters at the beginning. Additionally, during your adventure you can find additional companions at certain places in the game and hire them. You do not create companions, they are predefined characters when you meet them with a predefined personality and abilities (although you can decide their future progression when companions level up).
