If you start a multiplayer game, and your girlfriend joins in the character creation screen, you can each customize your own character. From character creation you can use the Steam overlay to send an invitation, or (depending on your multiplayer settings) you girlfriend can just use the Join option from the main menu.
Characters stay with the save, on the host's system. You can not import or export characters from one game into a different one.
