The only thing your choice of starter class affects are equipped gear:
If you wish to begin with certain skills, they require you to have the weapon equipped (eg you cannot take Ricochet without picking Ranger of Wayfarer).
It'll also affect starting armor, but ultimately these are very minor indeed - treat the choice of starting class as choice of weapon equipped at the start.
