It is supposed to make things golden. How do I do that?

Like crafting. Drag it over another item. You'll see that the worth of the item will get improved.

Err. I might be noob, but when I drag over something else in the inventory and lot go the items just swap places.

I wonder if this function is a bit glitchy. The other day I was trying to drag meat onto dough to make a meat pie, and also fish to make the fish pie, but it wasn't working. If I put the filter on for "only ingredients", dough wasn't showing up despite clearly being an ingredient.

Try it with equipped stuff (e.g. armor). That worked for me. It changed the color of my clothes/armor to gold and increased its value.

@Kingslayer
The pie doesn't work with every fish. There are different fish in the game. wink

What about meat, though? I tried raw meat and dough. Also, and sorry, this is getting really OT, but I'm surprised that certain things don't make anything, like combining "ham" and "bread".
