My characters are (still) level 3, but, after a battle with some undead, my experience points passed the next level mark while I did not receive a new level. Even after several battles and exploration, my experience points get higher and higher, far over the experience needed for the next level, but I never gain another level.
I fear this is not supposed to happen..

That's how many experience points you still need to get to the next level, not the threshold of total XP you need to cross. If you add those two numbers up, you'll see it totals 20,000. THAT's the threshold for level 4.

Yes, levelling up does seem somewhat slow.
