I've used it since before the HL2 launch, so I've pretty much seen every iteration of it over the past 10+ years. From a simple chat/matchmaking server for CS 1.x (and probably others), to the multi-platform distribution system it is today. It's not a perfect system (not that there is one), but as far as digital distribution models go, it's one of the better ones.

Although, I will say that I have zero interest in their "social" garbage, like the trading cards. I also went on a mini-crusade when the Orange Box was released, because at launch it required the Steam Overlay, and I hate the overlay. I have it enabled for precisely one game, TES IV: Oblivion, and that only because the ObSE requires it to operate.
