This happened to me and my friend just after we entered Luculla forest. The character I was controlling (my friend was hosting) was unable to speak to anyone and would not enter combat properly. It also wasn't able to take any damage, even through status effects. Changing areas and reloading the game doesn't fix it, and the last save we have is quite a few hours back.
