Apparently I locked myself out of being able to peacefully resolve the Headless Nick quest, simply because
at the very beginning of the game I failed to convince Gallagher to go to the other guy's stage. It seems to be impossible for me to get the talking head with Reginald around.

That's fine by me, I don't mind failing quests, but I think Larian should give us the option to actually fail. As far as I can tell this quest will remain in my quest log unless
I kill everyone at the fair.
I even tried killing Headless Nick and Lilian, but it didn't work. Please add an actual failstate or more ways to solve this quest, as I don't feel like killing half of Cyseal just to get this quest out of my log.

I thought it was weird that
you can't steal the head while invisible, you can't use telekinesis on it, and you can't even mention Nick in dialog options.

I wound up killing 6 people, at least 5 of whom were innocent of any wrongdoing and the other was simply a liar, to help two ghosts. Ugh.

Lol that would be an excessive reaction. I can see the police report now.

Interrogator: so why did you slaughter everyone in the village?

You: because I wanted to finish the quest and get my 2300 XP

Interrogator: .... Psychopath

I ended up killing them all as well. None of my characters even took a reputation hit, except Jahan who initiated combat.

You have beaten me at rock paper scissors. The punishment is...death!

Sounds like the entire game in a nutshell.

This actually violates Larian's own design philosophy. There should be multiple ways to complete every quest.

And although "kill everyone in town" is an option, there should be a third skill based one.

For example, if you fail the diplo check you can ask to "rent" or "consult" the head for a ridiculous fee paid to the performer.

Paying said fee allows you to talk to the head without coming across as a felon.

Its one of the few examples of bad design in the game.

One of the first on my list to correct and expand if i ever do a mod.

Yeah, it's one of the flawed quests... we'll see if Larian adds more options with later patches or if we need modmakers like Hiver.

And yes, I also killed a bunch of people there...

(And that 'You failed at RPS, now you die!' made me laugh... thanks! :))

I just completed this quest after failing the Crowd Warming bit.

This is how I did it:
1. I unchained a character that could use the "Teleport" skill.
2. I moved the remainder of my party away from the area.
3. I put the solo character near the arch closest to the NPC who was currently in possession of the skull.
4. I used the teleport skill on the NPC and moved him behind the large tree that is located behind his stage.
5. I killed the NPC.
6. After killing that ONE NPC, I was able to access the head.

I just went back there when i got "featherfall" and relocated whole crowd, ony by one, far from the head :] Success, without killing anyone.
