It serves no tactical purpose and is one of the most annoying things in a game in recent memory. I'm totally okay with it in combat but it makes me want to punch things and yell and make forum rants when it happens out of combat.

It's already fixed, actually with even more than one solution:
1) Walk slowly.
2) Walk around.
3) Put nails under your shoes.
4) Use tornado spell.
