I'm having a bit of trouble with leveling my guys. The easiest gate to the west of the city leads to that area with the weeping Orc. There are only a few enemies with a level 7 elite boss. After finally killing him with my level 3's (took me more than a dozen attempts), I went into the skull cave, and the enemies were even more difficult.
Crafting doesn't seem to grant XP, and you can't progress in the main quest without going through the even tougher east gate. There also don't appear to be many leveling opportunities inside the city walls.
So how do you level in the beginning? Thanks for any advice.

Hi Maziou, all I can say is talk to everyone! There is actually a lot of ways to level in town, Captain Aureus gives you various ways to go that will get you XP. Have you got to your Homestead yet as that pretty much got me a level I think? I set out properly from town when I was 4th level and have now reached 6th after fighting in the robot cave, not sure if I did it right but not finding it too hard at this point!

The west gate is not the easiest. If you go out by the north west gate (next to the mortuary), you'll find level 3-4 undeads which are quite easy to manage with a level 3 party.

Just stay in the areas with rain and those enemies are levels 3-4. Clear all of those all the way up to the lighthouse. Should be level 5+ by the time you finish that.

Go west from the upper town.
Dont forget to do the small underground dungeon beneath the city. Advance the murder quest as much as you can - just follow directions and clues as they are given to you in the journal. Loot everything you can. Do all smaller quests you can find by talking to everyone - and trading with everyone.
First fight outside uppertown west gates is easy since the guards will help you. After that turn right, find a small hut with two dogs infront of it, loot - proceed bit further ahead in that direction until you hear someone from the next nearby ruin house. Escort him back to the city. Report that to the captain.
Go back to that area and find out which of the fights you can handle.
Continue.

Thanks for the replies. This info helped a lot. I could have sworn there was something that said the western gate was easiest. But the NW gates seem to be much more manageable, and I can finally leave the city to level. So thanks for the info.

Legion commander said that. Generally, being done in the city, you need to go to the Lighthouse first, preferably through the caves under the cemetery. Preferably do not engage the Lighthouse boss though, just level up on the fights in the area that leads to him.

Just one more thing - its well not really a cheat but... Its quite helpful to save before/during conversations. You will find that some answers to conversations provide quite a bit more exp then others.(like massively more).
For example the 2 drunk guards at the bridge before you ever get to town. If you just chose to let them take you to the wizard, or I think even if you just chose to fight them you get like 180exp. If you have your source hunters argue about it(pick different choices) and then have to rock/paper/scissors with each other(and the person arguing against fighting wins) you get 900exp.
You'll also find a couple of scared guards hiding behind a tree before you get to the lighthouse. After you have beaten the lighthouse encounter and go back to the commander guy (Auris ? or whatever his name is) you can either lie and say the guards solved it or you can tell the truth and say you solved it for them. In this particular case its very good to lie. Telling the truth is worth 3000exp and lying is worth 6300exp.
