not entirely sure, but try dropping the stardust next to the tree

as is said, did that on several locataions around the tree

Try placing it in the shadow right in front of the entrance.

I don't think you need to pass a Perception test again, at least I can see it with Perception 2 (-3 Malus from the Intelligence Books).
