well..start by frame capping the game to 60fps. you don't need more than that. Also just to be safe, download 'rivatuner' or 'evga precision' to monitor you gpu temp and also control gpu fan speed , catalyst control panel can also be used. If temp. are abnormally high, you should stop playing immediately and do the things BlueFlamingSky said to prevent damaging your card.
